Surely if RTÉ TWO had rights issues it could switch to RTÉjr or RTÉ ONE +1 or RTÉ NEWS NOW?

Not RTÉ News Now. I asked them a year or two ago about a GAA match being shown online only and not on the News Now channel as they sometimes did with dog racing. RTÉ advised me that as News Now is available online worldwide they cannot show anything on it that has rights restrictions. A useless excuse but there you go.

MOD NOTE: This thread has been split from the RTÉ Two Saorview/Satellite different schedule thread

It's an excuse. RTÉ can use RTÉ News Now. They won't for big sports.

Why? Advertisers. RTÉ have sponsorship deals for big sports put them on to RTÉ News Now that deal is gone. Though a simple solution would be to have to separate feeds of the channel.

Even if they don't have two separate feeds, RTÉ blanked out all Olympic coverage on RTÉ News Now, rather than just blanking the pictures and running the Soundtrack? Ended up look unprofessional in the middle of the sports news dropping the feed on RTÉ News Now.

Soccer tonight could be carried on RTÉ News Now, during half time recommending that you turn to RTÉ TWO for analysis, and advertisers.

RTÉ have separate feeds for all online stuff. There was a time when RTÉ News Now didn't exist on DTT. RTÉ NEWS NOW international feed and RTÉ NEWS NOW DTT. Not impossible.

RTE should have got permission from that great TV scheduler in the BAI to use some of the 5 test card channels (two of which are HD) to fill with FIFA WC content. If fact they could have set up a WC channel the way the Beeb did for the 2012 olympics with loads of red-button channels.

    Another lost oportunity.

Mind you they do have problems with the BAI and the Minister about RTE NN and RTE jr.1+1 not giving them any advertising revenue, and OTV refusing to pay carriage, and even TG4 refusing to go HD officially, as well as TV3 generally.

Perhaps they knew it was a lost cause anyway and so did not bother even asking. Pity.

Besides any of these arguments, I don't think RTE have the infrastructure to allow for separate programme streams on different platforms. :)

RTE1 was half-arsed regionalised in the past as mentioned:

Launching on Sky killed this stone dead.

That's a pity as they could have shown the other World cup game that is played simultaneously with one that is being shown on RTE2 HD.

That's a good shout; however I would imagine they wouldn't want to annoy the large proportion of their viewers who watch through Sky.

By putting the alt match online at least everyone (in the Republic) can access it.

There is no reason that the alternative match could not also be carried online, as the main match was carried online. It is up to Sky/UPC if they want to take services from broadcasters, Sky still don't provide RTÉ News Now.

Whilst I agree with you (to a degree) if they were to advertise during their World Cup coverage that the alternative match is available on a channel not available to a sizeable number of their viewers then they'd be asking for trouble :)

I'd agree if they were to make the decision right now and if their online coverage of the alternative match was wall to wall with sponsorship.

    Here's what you do: -

    1. You plan
    2. You apply to the BAI and ask to use the test channels for alt matches.
    3. You then inform UPC and Sky that a new channel will be available to them should they want them for the alternative match.

If you can't be bothered getting a "NO" from the BAI or if you get a "NO" then you

    1. Put the alternative match on RTÉ NEWS NOW
    2. You inform sky that they can have access to RTÉ NEWS NOW
    3. You have the RTÉ Presenter advise viewers that the match will be covered on RTÉ News Now. On RTÉ News Now game you advise viewers to tune to the panel for full analysis at half time and full time, to allow advertisers get value for their money.
    4. If Sky don't take up your offer you inform viewers that RTÉ NEWS NOW is available online and on UPC and Saorview.

I only saw the end to one of the games of their online stream and it just finished at full time, surely they could have started up the live RTÉ TWO feed??? Didn't even end with an advert, what did they do at half time?

That was the IOC fault since they won't even allow sound feeds from venues so RTE choice was either to cut the feed at the start of Olympics items or not show it live so that they could edit it

Remember before RTE could do geoblocking on it's radio streams they turned off live streaming during the Olympics

As far as I know the NBC Nightly News isn't shown at all on CNBC when the Winter/Summer Olympics are on. The IOC are ludicrously strict when it comes to rights. To the point where it probably holds back the product.

I was watching NBC news (via Sky) last Friday night. They mentioned that there was an up coming item on the USA's involvement in the 'soccer' world cup. I endured numerous ad breaks waiting for the item only for the picture to be replaced with a message along the lines of 'We are unable to transmit these pictures in this territory' and was left with sound only .. at which stage I switched it off :(

That often happens with the NBC Nightly News, they don't have copyright clearance and sometimes up to half the bulletin is missing. When the Olympics come around they just give up. That's why there should really be two versions of RTE News Now. One for Ireland and an international version.
