    Hi,

Out of curiosity, on a 100k+ cycle what would be the general consensus on carrying water bottles? 2 bottles or stick to 1 and refill along the way?

    Jon

2 for me and probably a refill.

two 750ml bottles should be grand, its good to hydrate yourself for a few days before hand. your wee should be clear before you start your cycle. try just take sips on the cycle and don't let yourself get thirsty. if your thirsty your body is already dehydrated.

Two in winter, maybe two and one or two refills in the summer, works for me.

I tend to carry two and refill when chance allows. I often end up never touching bottle 2 but I'd hate to be reaching for it if it wasn't there. It turns out to be an extra 0.8kg to carry around but, until I've lost the extra kgs off me...

I'd bring 2 x 750ml bottles and refill along the way.

Saturday last I drank 4 x 750ml on a 115 km trip. Sounds like a lot compared to some on here but I only had one 'wee' stop.

I put a 2:1 High5 mix into one of the refills. I'd just began to feel hungry but drank that mix and I was grand then.

For long spins try to get a litre down in the hour leading up to departure, then roughly a bottle every hour for a 4 hour spin (probably a bit less). Start off with two bottles and refill around half way through.

    :eek::eek:

I refer you to Rule #40

    40. Water Bottles shall be referred to solely as "Bidons" and shall have a volume NEVER EXCEEDING 500ml. Bidons shall always match team/kit colours. It is NOT ACCEPTABLE in ANY CIRCUMSTANCE to leave one’s bidons on the bike for more than ten (10) minutes post-ride OR while transporting bikes via bike rack.

I try to get thru 750ml every hour in on the bike in summer, a fair bit less in winter. Always bring 2 x bidons if going to be 2 hrs plus

I never know if people are serious when they quote a rule, haha :pac:

If I was you, OP, I'd bring two bottles.

Kind of difficult for those of us who are out every day!

Am I the only one who thinks hydration is overplayed ? Unless the weather is warm. But we rarely see warm weather here.

It's easy to get dehydrated in cold weather precisely because we don't feel the moisture loss externally.

That said I think it is overplayed and a lot of the intake described in the thread seems excessive.

You can drink too much water.

You can drink too much, but 3L over 4+ hours on a warm day couldn't be considered too much I'd say. My ride the last day for example..... Drank about 3L over 4 hours ish .... only needed to go for a wee once so I can only assume I wasn't drinking too much. There are other days I suppose where I can go for a 60km ride and drink just one bottle. Depends on the day I guess.

You get your domestique to go back and get them!

Often only carry one 750ml bottle unless it's warm or going well over 100k any further I'll usually be stopping anyway and can refill. Only have one bottle cage on newest bike at the minute waiting for LBS to get ones I want. Was pushing it last Sunday for 85k in that heat forgot money as well.
