I'm having trouble getting good suction on the various mounts I have for GPS, phones etc and think it's about time to give up on the suction mounts and go for a screw in dash mount.

Any recommendations for something sturdy, secure, universal and neat that won't fall apart would be very welcome. I've tried amazon and dx but all the mounts just appear to be suction.

Looking for something to suit various devices from GPS to phones of different sizes :)

Put a few drops of water in the suction cup before you put it to the screen.

I have a super cheapo yoke sticks in my air vents. Works fine for me.
    Cost about €2.50 on ebay.

Mounts for vehicles that don't involve drilling - usually slip between dash panels so can be removed without leaving holes.

Try cleaning the windscreen thoroughly with a 50:50 mixture of isopropanol and water. You can pick it in up in a chemist shop. It's an excellent degreaser. Also clean the back of the suction cups with it.

Also bear in mind that suction cups have a habit of coming unstuck in extremely warm weather like we've had lately.

If you're looking for sturdier mounts, have a look at RAM mounts.

Have you tried a little of washing up liquid on the cup, it's worked before.

I'd buy another Kenu Airframe tomorrow. And I've tried a lot of phone mounts. This one goes into your heater and works great.

Got a reply back from RAM with the following set up recommended:

Use the X-Grip as a holder..

    http://www.ram-mount.co.uk/xgrip™-universal-smart-phone-sat-nav-holder-with-1-ball-p-1635.html

a round base/ball screwed to the dash..

    http://www.ram-mount.co.uk/1-ball-round-base-with-amps-pattern-p-1011.html

and a double socket arm to connect the two..

    http://www.ram-mount.co.uk/double-socket-arm-for-1-ball-p-1009.html

Working out pricey, but they have very good reviews and should definitely last.

The RAM kit is great altogether. Takes heavy use in its stride and if you need to change a device and holder you don't end up binning the rest. I've used them for years and never had any problems.

    Mountek nGroove.

Interesting. Can this be used when there's a CD in the player or does it have to be empty?

The brodit ones ROR linked too looked great and very comprehensive in that they have different mounting positions tailored to each vehicle and photos and diagrams of each too. Pretty impressed but unfortunately the positions didn't really suit for the vehicles I have.

Just give it a good lick and you will be grand!. Don't overdo it. Only needs to be a little bit wet to work.

Ended up drilling through the garmin mounts and screwing them into the dash. It only took about 2 minutes to do each one and although there's a little bit of movement with the astra dash (the dash itself is quite soft), there's no movement at all with the transits. I'll probably still get the RAM mount for somewhere to put phones and what have you, but the garmins are sorted for now!
