Are you afraid of the dark?

Got a call from the nephew who was on the sauce and would not walk 2 miles home as he said "im afraid of the dark". After a lengthy conversion with mild/moderate verbal abuse he eventually got over his fear and walked half ways and I picked him up. Why are people so afraid of the dark? are ghosts real? Is Facebook to blame for this?

Have you ever been alone at night
    Thought you heard footsteps behind
And turned around and no one's there?
And as you quicken up your pace
You find it hard to look again
    Because you're sure there's
    Someone there

Evolution taught us to be afraid of the unknown, Gave us a healthy fear of Predators lurking in the dark. Still a relevant fear today why we have not evolved a lower level. Still plenty of danger in the modern world in the dark.

The bogeyman is hiding in the bushes...wait no that's just my neighbour. I'll get the pitchfork again.

Generally no - when I'm at home the dark doesn't bother me, even if there was an intruder the dog is only downstairs and would alert us to that in no time.

If it's getting dark or is dark and I'm on my own in a dodgy area or town on any weekend night at 2 a.m. then I tend to be far more on edge, although that can be attributed to human beings more than the actual dark itself. :pac:

AH answer: No the dark is afraid of me.

Real answer: No, am not afraid of the dark but I find it difficult to go to sleep at night and prefer to wait til it starts to get bright as I have less bad dreams when it is getting brighter. When I go to sleep at a normal hour I find I am more prone to really bad dreams, talking and walking in my sleep and have done some crazy stuff in my sleep. So I am not scared of the dark but am scared to sleep when it is dark, if that makes sense!

I'm not easy in certain situations. Like back in the day walking home at 3am from my mates. Countryside, almost pitchblack down a road surrounded by forestry. The rational side of my brain knows there's nothing to be scared of but then you grow up watching horror movies and the old imagination plays tricks.

So basically I scare myself the dark just assists in the process.

I find everything a little more scary in the dark. :P

I think the most terrifying thing is driving home from the middle of nowhere in the early hours of the morning. I come from the shticks and some of my friends live in the fecking wilderness, very remote areas. I hate driving back from their houses late at night/early in the morning. It's pitch black, there's not a sinner to be seen. If my car gives out, I'm absolutely fcuked. :(
I always check the back seats for serial killers before I get in but I am never fully convinced that there's no one there. So I spend my journey home panicking that I am going to get stabbed by some crazy dude behind my seat. :(

Grand in the city at night time, all the lights and sh*t. :P

If you wait for daybreak to go asleep it's no wonder that your sleeping world is peopled by nightmares crazy sleep stuff. I am afraid of the dark but I sleep with the light on - problem solved.

It's 2.15 am you hear your mother calling you from downstairs, when you're halfway down the stairs, you hear your mother's voice from her bedroom saying "I heard it too don't go down". What do you do ... What. Do. YOU. Do?
    ==============================
Four things to be afraid of in the dark:
    1. The edges of chairs and tables
    2. Lego pieces
    3. Upturned plugs
    4. Someone turning the light on when you're halfway through tip-toeing through a room due to any of the above

    I love the dark.
Love walking out and about when it's dark too.

(however it's not particularly safe to do so, and certainly not alone.... )

No but I am afraid of the light. And garlic, terrifies me for some reason.

No. It's your imagination that scares you. You could be walking upstairs at night or through the sitting room without turning the light on and for a split second you think what if someone is following me. Then you start to feel like you're scared but it's all in your head.
