Do Trolls serve a much needed higher purpose?

I like to think I am a pretty tough person.

I like to think I am a pretty positive person with a strong dissective filter for insults and criticism.

And part of the reason why I have these good things is because of Trolls. Not just internet comment apocalypse trolls. But real life trolls. People who unfairly **** all over your being. Abusers, bullies namecallers.

Without trolls my dedication and toughness would never have been tested and there would be no evaluative way to distinguish truly valid criticism from BS. Manipulation and Trolling reveals by contrast what is valid and honest.

Maybe the trolls are not debasing the internet or life. Maybe they are rarefying and refining the contribution of others.

All the nonsense does actually provide added value and status to the people who give positivity in my life and provide loving non self serving constructive criticism with no agenda.

There is just one problem. You see I have now been through so much that my skin is too tough for normal mortal trolls.

I am feeling all the tough love. But I have been through so much of it my self esteem is just soaring now. How am I to be taken down a peg or two? How can I climb the next mountain?

I mean what do I do now? There is just nothing that can get through.

Also I have a philosophical question. If we give Trolls a purpose do they in fact cease to be Trolls?

    Woa......................................................................................

The flyblows reveal the blows of justice by contrast so are they really flyblows?

Slings and arrows of outrageous fortune moment....

Mindblown is sometimes to have stagnant air moved by hot air (my definition) not just brilliant air.

    I had a weird day.

Different kinds of trolls all are warty...

From rabid flamers to talkers, crybabies, to those who make multiple accounts and pm peeps, white knights...a lot of it is to attempt to nudge other users of a forum...

Or a lot of it is pure boredom....

But maybe it's all good for us. :-)

Ah I have never minded a good aul trolling....builds character.

You are right though the standard has really dropped. There used to be a little genius in some ....

    Most of em harmless. :-)

Needless to say don't ever be one peeps ..they have warts!

Trolls go well with taters and if you cook them long enough they're quite tender.

Have you tried going home to the Mammy for the weekend? Any time I need taking down a peg or two I do that. Nothing like it for bursting your bubble.

"Ah there you are Son! Have you been eating enough, you're looking very thin, is she feeding you?.." and on and on and on..

The trick with trolls is to make sure you have a few riddles up your sleeve in case you run into one when you're out and about. And then when they attack you can use your riddles on them.

Some people take it very seriously, I think it must be an adrenaline rush to be involved in organised trolling in a group like Lulzsec. They start off on small message boards and sites and work their way up to hacking major organisations because they want a bigger rush.

This is where a line gets crossed as some Lulzsec members found out a couple of years back when they started fcuking with the CIA. The founder Sabu took a plea deal and started ratting out other members.

On a smaller level I don't like what's happening with Fred 'Bailbonsh' Herbert, where the daily phone harassment is obviously taking a toll on his business. Once they have enough material for the soundboard they should leave the victim alone, the problem is there's always an asshole who'll leak the number.

It has happened three times. twice it seemed to stem from FB. It's kinda scary and hurtful.

No strong feelings about trills one way or another but I sometimes momentarily wonder about the sheer repetitive effort that it requires to be a successful one. In any other sphere of (real) life bar internet forums, it would basically be seen as a bit weird or unbalanced.

I see you've researched it a bit, ya there's loads of different victim soundboards out there, it's an online community that's growing.

The best thing to do is just say nothing, even turn off your phone for an hour or two if the calls are coming in non stop. If they're getting no reaction off you they'll soon get bored and move on.

"Troll" is the flavour of the year in the politically correct world. It has lost almost all meaning and has been distorted and twisted and abused so much who the hell knows what it us supposed to mean now ? More and more and more we hear about 'trolls' when what they really mean is inconvenient people saying things they won't to head.

People who know they're being inflammatory rather than constructive tend to say the above quite a bit.
Trolling isn't just views that a lot of people don't like, it's being deliberately provocative just to get a rise, and often not offering any support for the view in question, even when asked to do so repeatedly.
Objection to it has got **** all to do with political correctness. Now *that* is a term whose meaning is distorted and twisted and abused.

You've just made my point. Clearly you don't read the newspaper articles that rant on about trolls every other week but clearly mean it in the the way I described. Those who don't get that are usually the kinds of people who know they're being inflammatory.

the above thesis implies that one set of people have an inherent right to the role of arbiter of what is " right and correct " , who says i must prove anything to you or more to the point that you get to decide what is valid or credible ?

labelling someone a troll is nothing but a form of censorship , an attempt to discredit someone by way of placing them in a box

Unfortunately this is exactly what has happened. A quite useful term has been completely destroyed in the general public domain (though not completely in the more experienced forum and discussion domain, I think) and become a totally subjective tool for establishment hubris. And as a result, we are left without a term for those who really are intentionally disruptive, abusive, offensive and provocative in a bad way.
Language matters. It is ironic that it is journalists and writers that have done the biggest damage to this word, putting their own egos and income streams before what they should consider a core tool of their trade, the language.

In the media it seems to be always women celebrities that are "affected" by "trolls".
As for the non-celebrities young teenage girls can be driven to suicide by internet bullying.
There seems to be an incapability to turn off social media! Also you never hear of men being "seriously affected" by people on the internet. Why is this? Is it a hyper-sensitivity/over emotional reaction issue?
Do trolls serve a higher purpose in weeding out the more sensitive/impressionable people in society like a form of natural selection?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.
