Why Does Hay (and Silage?) Heat Up?

I do remember leaving the old square bales of hay out in the field for a day or two before bringing them in. Never really understood it. This evening the father was looking out at the neighbours bales of silage waiting to be wrapped. Contractor bales in the day and wraps in the evening. He was saying the bales would "heat up" before they were wrapped and that this would lead them to going musty or mouldy. Can someone explain to me exactly what is going on and why??

The moisture in them, if they are too wet and stored they will staet to heat.
