There was an alternator changed at one point as well, but I forgot to record that at the time. The old alternator was fully functional but was whining so it was replaced. There was also some minor bodywork carried out by Davy Pickard Paintworks in Westside Business Park during the first year. It was purely cosmetic to repair a stone chipped front bumper and some wear on the corners of the bumpers from poor attempts at parking by the previous owner. The paintwork has been maintained since by CleanCar.ie

The car has continued to evolve during my ownership. I've always had a particular vision in my head, which sometimes changes but I'm always certain I know what I want to achieve in the long run. Whilst the modifications are primarily cosmetic, I want them to be as subtle as possible so as to retain an OEM+ style on the car. This usually require using either OEM parts where available or using products by companies closely associated with BMW i.e. ACS, Hartge etc.

    Current Vehicle Specification:
    • Wheels & Tyres - Front: Borbet Style 95 19x9 ET24 with Hankook Ventus Evo 225/35/19
    • Wheels & Tyres - Rear: Borbet Style 95 19x10 ET24 with Hankook Ventus Evo 255/30/19 plus 5mm Hubcentric Spacer
    • Brakes - Front: BMW Performance by Brembo 6 Piston Calipers with 338mm Cross Drilled, Slotted & Vented Brembo Discs with Brembo Pads
    • Brakes - Rear: OEM Calipers with EBC Turbo Groove Discs & EBC Yellow Stuff Pads
    • Forge Motorsport Stainless Steel Braided Brake Lines
    • KW Variant 1 Suspension System
    • SSDD Motorsport Carbon Fibre Corner Splitters
    • ACS Carbon Fibre Roof Spoiler
    • M Style Carbon Fibre CSL Style Boot Lid
    • High Gloss Black Kidney Grills
    • M-Sport Front Bumper with Number Plate Recess Removed & Smoothed
    • Lightwerkz Custom Built Bi-Xenon Projector Headllights with LED Angel Eyes
    • LED Blackline Rear Lights
    • Nokya 2500K Front Fog Lights
    • LED Side Repeaters & License Plate Bulbs
    • LED Interior Lighting
    • Kenwood DNX7230DAB Headunit with Garmin GPS, iPod, DVD & Bluetooth Functionality
    • Carbon Fibre Interior Trim
    • Carbon Fibre Steering Wheel Insert
    • Digital Speedometer Coded by Germaniks
    • BMW Performance Weighted Shifter & Gaiter
    • BMW Performance Handbrake & Gaiter
    • BMW Performance Pedals
    • Rear Windows Tinted
    • Kiwi WiFi PLX2 OBD-II Dongle for Speed, Boost & Temperature Measurements
    • Engine De-Swirl Flapped
    • K&N Air Filter
    • Upgraded Vortex Type Turbo Breather Filter
    • EGR Bypass
    • Dual Tipped Custom Exhaust (OEM Pipe Dimensions)

So things are moving along quite quickly at the moment in advance of the Terenure show next month where I plan to display the car as part of the BMW section of the show. I met up with a friend in Dublin at the weekend who has an arch roller to gain a little more clearance in the rear arches. This allowed a 5mm hub centric spacer to squeeze in there with extended bolts. It brings the effective offset of the rear to ET19 on a 19x10 rim. The fit is perfect now and still zero rubbing issues despite the rear being adjusted all the way down.

Yesterday morning I dropped the car off to Davy Pickard Paintworks in Westside Business Park in Waterford. He wasn't long about getting to work respraying the front of the car and sent me photo updates last night. He had already feathered out any stone chips on the bonnet, bumper and wings before spraying the bare metal with epoxy primer to restore the corrosion protection. The car was masked up and the front was sprayed with four coats of black 2k high build primer before being sanded down again ready for paint.

Davy invited me out today to ensure I was happy with the fit and position of the Hartge Japan carbon front splitter as it could be mounted in a couple of different ways. Once the final position was decided, it was marked up and test mounted. It's only loose in the photo above but it's going to look awesome once it's secured to the front bumper.

Once the paint is on, it's going to be followed by an enhancement detail next week to bring the rest of the paintwork up to scratch. Roll on July 6th...

Whats the bhp after all that tweaking, just as an aside, would you not have been better off buying an m3

I would hazard a guess and say a handsome 5 figure sum

I'm not really interested in chasing power to be honest, it's pointless in a diesel anyways. I wanted to build something that looks like nothing else on the road, still retained factory reliability and can cover ground at a reasonable pace and as cost efficient as possible. It's my daily driver so it has to be a car that does a lot of things. There's of course a trade off there, but I'm more than happy to live with that. The chassis and ride is phenomenal.

Funny you mention an M3 as I was strongly considering buying an E46 this year. When you take a closer look at running costs (fuel, tax, maintenance, potential repairs including subframe issues etc.) however, you quickly realise why there are so many rough examples on DoneDeal, Carzone etc. It's a €10,000 car to buy, but still a, what, €80,000 car to run?

As for how much the car is standing me? It's not something I like to think about but I'm fortunate enough that I work within the motoring industry and have made lots of contacts over the years. This usually means that expensive parts become much more affordable :)

I didn't have the car ready in time but hoping to have it at Blarney, one way or another, this weekend.

My father did happen to win best '70s car at Terenure though with his '74 Escort 1300e :)

May actually get to see it at some stage, I'm fairly sure I've seen it going around naas, with a side mounted reg? Otherwise it's a pretty damn similar bm

Well done to your dad too :)

I think there was a black E90 sport up that way alright, but it was written off recently. In saying that, I'm up Mondello way a lot and would pop into Naas for lunch / dinner afterwards so who knows? By the time Blarney comes this weekend, it'll definitely be more distinctive :)

Unfortunately, due to everything conspiring against me I didn't make it to Terenure this year. Knowing that I was going to miss out, I've been at full speed ahead to make the annual Blarney Show this coming weekend (Saturday from noon in the Square). It's mostly been niggly little things to sort out this week (I noticed that my right rear wheel was wobbling slightly, but it just turned out be a hub-centric spacer fitted face-in as opposed to face-out) but today I got to the last of them thanks to Davy Pickard and Larry Kehoe in CleanCar.ie

I'm really looking forward to just driving it tomorrow morning for the first time in ages that I'm happy with everything on the car. I still have a couple of small things left to do but I honestly, maybe, perhaps think that I'm almost at the end. Sort of. I think.
