    Hi All,

Please please please as much as you would like to .... don't tell me that I'm crazy.... I really feel this is justified....

I've been working in a company for 7 years. Same job now as I was doing then. With a few extra responsibilities. Straight out of school into the job.

I've done a couple of courses at night but couldn't afford a degree level course.

I am absolutely miserable. I am very lucky to have a job but I couldn't be more miserable. I travel from a different county (like many others I know) and the days are long.

Things are about to get worse. Most of my team are let go and they want me to change my hours - i probably wont get home until 8.30pm.

I would do this for a worthwhile job, demanding job or recognition etc etc.... but I just answer phones.

for years I've been sending out my CV, tailored it, sent it again etc etc... I've gotten interviews... even one last week but I never hear anything back.

I feel that my only option is to quit.
Be unemployed. By choice. Until I am successful with an interview.
Of course the burden of the bills will be on the other half.

    Anyone else ever do this?
What did you do in your free time?
What did you do to help pay the bills?
Was it a good or bad decision?

    Thank you.

Are there any options to move jobs , take on new work , in your current job ?
Anything that might make it more interesting ?

If people have been let go maybe you could do some of what they did ?

I'd try hard to go through all those options - you might have do so already - but if your thinking of going on the dole you have nothing to lose by being frank with your managers and co-workers.

Don't quit, they may make you redundant. What would you like to work at?

thats true... thanks so much for the reply.

All thats left for me is extra calls to answer.

I don't even know if I get the dole if I quit ?

I really appreciate your response and as of late I have had the opportunity to be more upfront but its on deaf ears ya know yourself.

Another heap of CVs sent out today, some of the same places I applied to yesterday. I have a batch printed and I'll hand them into every door on the way to the bus today.

I know I'm very very lucky... but I'm just as lost.

Not now, they made redundant those that they didnt have to pay much to.

I would sweep floors, really dont mind. anything that would help with the bills.

You won't get the dole for 9 weeks? If you quit.

Why were your colleagues let go?

But this job pays the bills and you don't want to do it, you don't want to go from one bad situation to another. Have you asked about redundancy?

sounds like a fairly big company.

I'd go to HR (or your boss) and be honest. Ask if they have anything else that you might be considered for - they might find sth to alleviate the boredom - even if it's not majorly exciting, a temporary change might be enough to give you some breathing space.

Try to stay in the job - 2 weeks after you leave, you'll regret it.

Any holidays planned? If you've got spare leave, try to take some of it quickly.

do you have any hobbies outside work? Not easy with long hours, but you need to be doing sth to help you forget about work for a while.

Have you discussed this with your OH? They need to know how unhappy you are...even if they can't help immediately.

    Best of luck!

    7 year itch?

People in a job 7 years usually find a nice niche where they know enough to make themselves indispensable, but are rarely helpful. They don't get pushed around too easy either. They learned the more you do the less thanks you get, so they find a balance.

So it's kind of unfortunate you're finding yourself in a position where your job is getting more stressful or working later hours. Try to push back on your employer a bit so at least your terms of employment don't decline.

It's possible they're trying to make you quit without paying redundancy. Try joining a union if you haven't already, and don't rule out legal action if they dismiss you unfairly.

I wouldn't recommend quitting. And as for "Another heap of CVs sent out today, some of the same places I applied to yesterday".. I hope you're tailoring the cv's and cover letters, also don't be afraid to get some professional (or semi-professional) advice on the content of your cv.

If you're at the stage where you are willing to just quit anyway, then you don't have much to lose there and that can give you a certain amount of leverage.

For example, you could try refusing to work the new hours, or you could speak to your boss or HR and ask for changed conditions or a hefty pay raise.

Normally you'd need to be a bit subtle and nuanced about such things, but if your only other option is to quit anyway then what's the worst that could happen? Assuming you are definitely going to quit then you have nothing to lose and can only possibly gain.

    Hi All,

Getting some great responses from agencies lately... so maybe things will work out ???

I wish I could be loyal, my parents talk about work in the old days... make it sound like everyone looked after each other!

I wouldn't put much truck in agencies, a lot just want cvs on their books.

And they could have you temping for ages.

the burden of the bills will be on the other half

Considering you haven't been able to get a new job for a few years now, I think it would be highly unfair on your partner to burden her with the bills for potentially a long time.

Instead of watching TV at night, start getting some certifications. Make yourself more employable.
