    Hey

Once again turning to boards for advice.

I'm buying a bike through the bike to work scheme. Not looking for anything fancy , just a run about really. If cycling to work it's maybe 5 or 6 km max

I went to a bike shop today and was quoted 299 for a jupiter Tuscan- this is within my budget of being able to spend 200e (400e total with the bike to work allowance)

anyone have any experience of these bikes ? Is it worth the money (total bike novice here -haven't owned one since I was ten years old)

    Thanks for any advice !

I had a Jupiter Vermont, which I think is pretty much identical spec, a few years ago and it was fine for city riding and the odd spin along the coast in Galway for the price.

Came with massive big nobbly Raleigh 40mm tyres which were absolutely bomb proof puncture wise, I was cycling on a cycling lane in Knocknacarra which was absolutely destroyed in one part with broken glass because of a bottle bank beside it and in the winter I rode every day I didn't get a single puncture. But they were very dead feeling and weren't much fun to ride.

I switched to 28m Vittoria Rubino tyres when the weather got better and the ride was much nicer and grip a lot better.

I'd normally advise spending your max bike to work and getting a road bike but seeing as all you want is a donkey, the bike you linked will be fine. The parts while low end and heavy are good decent quality shimano through out.

Seeing as you're doing bike to work I'd recommend the following.

Get the shop to fit mudguards, a pannier rack and lights, and throw in some wet gear (over pants, waterproof jacket) and a good quality lock like a Kryptonite Evolution Mini and you'll have everything you need.

Thanks for the advice Seaneh

I think ill prob go for the jupiter. I also came across a Relaigh 2013 Pioneer 1 for 300e but to be honest it felt very heavy on the road, I really want something light that I can just pick up and go!

Was also looking at a ridgeback motion 2014, although its more expensive it seems to fit perfectly and I got a good feeling on it!

If it's the Pioneer 2 I'd take the Pioneer over the Jupiter every day of the week myself. Comes with the Mudgaurds and rack installed.

If It's the Pioneer 1, I'd take the Jupiter because the Pioneer 1 has horrible grip shift hearing.

The Jupiter is probably better specced than the Ridgeback to be honest.

Would the jupiter be better do you think ? I hate that I know so little about the area! Its frustrating as I am sure the sales men are trying to advise me as best they can but I hate to think that im being done by due to my lack of knowledge.

Either way I am sure ill be happy with whatever I get! Its only a starting point!

Edit: It was the pioneer 1. The pioneer 2 looked nice but was 450e (outta my budget)

The Jupiter would be smack in the middle of the two to be honest. I'd take it over the pioneer 1.

I paid about €280 about 2 and a half years ago for the same bike. I'd take the other Jupiter (Tuscan) over it and that price.
From what I remember the only difference between the models was that the vermont had a suspension seat post, which is utterly pointless.

That sounds like a decent price for a Tuscan blankblank - would you mind saying where you got that quote?
