Sun Screen, After Sun and Moisturiser.

With rain predicted for tomorrow and the next few days I figured I'd ask about sun screen and ensure we don't get any more sunny spells until next June.

What sun screen do people use and what factor? And does anyone bring some with them to re-apply after two or so hours? I've just been using factor 30 of whatever Nivea brand I got on sale and it's worked ok so far. My longest trip was four hours in the sun and by comparing different tan lines it seems to have blocked out pretty much all tanning. Do you go for special stuff for your face though? And I don't bring any to reapply and I don't think I have a little bottle to put it in although a hotel shampoo bottle would probably work.

What do people use for after-ride care? I got burned pretty badly my first time out in the sun when I forgot the day star can actually burn you (this was sitting on a balcony, not cycling though.) I slathered my arms in Aloe Vera gel and that seems to have worked wonders to ensure a quick recovery and ease the pain and itching.

Also, what moisturiser do you use (if any?) I find my face gets really sore after a cycle, the same as when I was sailing so I guess it's a mixture of sun, wind and sweat, and salt from my coastal rides. I've just been using the Boots Brand "7 Facial Moisturizer." I got the Men's version because it was cheaper for more moisturizer compared to the women's and I doubt there's any difference in them apart from perfume.

And if you're guffawing at this and thinking, "My beautifully tanned bod will dazzle without skin care" then remember even if you don't get skin cancer you'll end up wrinkly and flappy skinned long before someone who looks after their skin.

I was out from 11.30am - 4.30pm in the hot sun on Sunday.
Cycled up around Enniskerry/ top of Lough Tay/ Military rd/ Sally Gap etc so there was hardly any protection/ shade from the sun.
At one point the temp on my Garmin said 28°C.

I put on some children's (possibly Nivea) factor 50 before I left, didn't reapply and returned home without a hint of sunburn on my exposed arms/ legs.
Very pleased not to have any burnt skin to deal with, after 1,400m climbing I was completely done in.

I used the same on my face/ neck, again no sunburn.
Didn't apply to my forehead, I was wearing a cycling cap with peak.

You can get little travel sunblock bottles, I put one of those in my saddle bag in case I felt I needed it.

Suncream: P20. Usually factor 20 but can get others.
Aftersun: Banana Boat Aloe After Sun. Feels nice and cool.

Having managed to turn my face a new and scary shade of red recently I again promised lady needmoregears I would put sunscreen on my face before heading off on the bike. This time I mean it. I'm gonna kick my addiction to itchy painful skin that stings like a b$$$tard when I shave.

Unfortunately my eyes tend to sting from sweat alone so I am wondering/nervous of what a heady cocktail of nivea/sweat will do to them. Is there anything that you can apply to your forehead that either won't wash off with sweat or that doesn't blind you. I seem to remember some waterproof stuff for kids - the one that was blue and made them look like smurfs until it soaked in. I'd prefer not to boil what's left of my brain by wearing a cap under the helmet.

i plaster on a load of kiehls cross terrain spf 50 on my face and neck and that does me for the day, very effective in the heat and sweat proof as tested by the sweatiest man in dublin :D

@needmoregears this is the stuff to avoid getting blinded. i also wear a halo headband

I use an SPF 50 in "for kids" packaging. I apply liberally on my face and neck and ears. I have arm covers (not warmers) so I apply the cream to my hands and legs.

I'm prone to cremating and SPF50 is enough for me for up to 4 hours* (with no-reapplication and tons of sweating).

Don't put suncream on your forehead. Nose, cheeks, ears and neck only. Works for me. If you wear a helmet and sunglasses, your forehead won't get burnt.

Ultrasun. It's a bit pricey but I've used it in tropical sun, on multi-day hikes and on long cycles and it's never let me down. One application is all it takes and it's fully waterproof so sweating isn't an issue. Both myself and my wife have very fair skin and we've tried many brands over the years and it's by far the best. We usually order it online from this crowd: http://www.feelunique.com/brands/ultrasun

Small trace of vaseline across your eybrows will ensure any sweat runs down the sides of your face not down into your eyes. Not enough to lube up the set of a racy movie mind!

Kiehls is the business. Use the facial fuel moisturiser after a spin too, does all sorts of good.

Picked up this little gem in the U.S. Very sweat proof and lasts most of the day in my case.
