    Hi guys,
Im heading to Salthill for a couple of days shortly, and wondering where the best spots are for sunsets considering I don't know the area….And could end up in a cove only to see the sun disappear behind some mountain way before sunset ever occurs:D:P

Have a car so distance not an option from Salthill if needed :)

    Thanks

    Salthill in Galway, I presume?

Anywhere along the promenade will give you a good view. From the Mutton Island causeway (at the start of the prom) you can get a view of it setting over Salthill. From there out to Blackrock you'll mostly get views of it over the sea. People like the diving board at Blackrock for photography purposes.

If you want to go a bit further out you can get a good view from Silverstrand.

If you search for any of those locations on Flickr you'll find a lot of photos.

Knockarasser Hill is a great spot for sunsets at this time of year. From there you can see it setting in a gap in the Twelve Pins, depending on visibility. I got a great shot here last Friday night, but only had my auto-exposure phone camera, SLR too heavy for cycling!

If driving is not a problem then consider going to the Clifden area and get the sun setting behind Inisboffin.

Download The Photographers Ephemeris (free to PC/MAC) and using that in conjunction with Google Maps/Images you'll find the perfect spot.

    That sounds interesting!! Thanks :-)

@ amdgilmore - Thanks for the tip about silver strand (Yes Salthill, Galway), and just wondering as my friend mentioned Barna strand because of its corral, is that any good this time of year for sunsets? Or wrong lay of the land?? Must check out your tips on Flickr :-)

@ Micilin Muc - thank you for your tip for higher ground shots!! :-)

Looking forward to it, now just hope the sun re-appears after all this rain!! Lol

If you're looking for a sunset over the ocean, the only place you'll see it in Galway at this time of year is anywhere north of Ballyconneely, which is miles out west.

The sun sets slightly further north at this time of year than in winter, which rules out the majority of the Galway coast because of the lie of the land.

As Clinton recommended, the North Clare coast is another option for ocean sunsets.

Good luck, and make sure to share your results here!
