Mods move this if its in the wrong section. Couldnt find anywhere else suitable.

My daughters bike needs repairing. The pedals barely turn as its jammed up. Im not sure of how to get the part out thats jammed. Im sure theres a special tool to get at it. Its like a ring with ball bearings behind it. Trying to find an image on Google but not sure what to type.

Basically what i need to know is the name of the tool so i can get one online and sort it out. Its only a small childs bike.

    Stupid questions from me time.
Is it the bar that goes through the centre of the bike that is not turning? If so, that is the bottom bracket. There are two kinds. A press on kind, which has a ring covering both ends, or a threaded kind, which the ring has teeth on it.

You can youtube bottom bracket removal, and either add press on, or threaded. Hope that helps.

If it's a child's bike, it's probably one of these bad boys:

The good news is that they're really simple to disassemble and repair/refresh. The ball bearings should be sitting in a cage that you can remove as one piece (on each side). if the cage is damaged and/or missing any bearings, then you need to replace it. A couple of quid in any bike shop.

When fitting it again, the main thing to make sure is that it's tight enough that the cranks don't rattle/wobble from side-to-side, but not so tight that you can't spin them freely (i.e. can't pedal smoothly). This can take a little bit of tweaking to get right, but assuming your child isn't planning on the RoK on the bike, it doesn't have to be perfect.

A bike shop can also fix this in about ten minutes.

Basically its the ring piece in behind the Nut. The circular bit in behind the hexagon on the left in picture. I think its off its threads and wont go back or forward.

Thats the part alright but is there a special tool to remove it? Id rather have the tool for future use rather than pay someone to fix it. If all else fails ill go to a bike shop and pay but it seems like an easy fix with the right tool.

Edit this is the one alright - http://youtu.be/VXQA4kNmhPA
