I think the answer lies somewhere in between, i.e. a wee bit of heel but not overly much.

What type of job? What's the rest of your interview kit?

I personally would never wear flats to an interview

Always heels of some kind - keep them low if you don't find them too comfortable.

I've wore flats before. I think if they are neat looking its fine but if you think you should wear heels maybe wear small ones. I cant walk too well in high heels so would never wear them to an interview as it would make me feel more uncomfortable.

I think ideally, like Ulysses1874 said, a modest mid to low heel is best. But generally you should wear what you're comfortable in.

I had an interview recently myself and had a bit of a shoe conundrum. I have a lovely pair of smart, black leather mid-heels that are perfect for interviews. Right before I was leaving the house I realised I actually lost one of the shoes and had to throw the other out ages ago. So I had platform heels or flats to go with. I didn't want to look like I was going on a night out, but my outfit looked really frumpy with flats.

I think flats would have been more appropriate than big high heels, but ultimately I was far more comfortable feeling like I looked good (but overdressed) than looking more formal but feeling uncomfortable about how I looked. I think in the end the heels contributed quite a bit to my confidence, my walk, my posture and how I sat. If in doubt, I'd definitely go with heels, but it depends on what you're more comfortable in.

Thanks for the replies.im wearing black trousers white shirt and black blazer. I was thinking of maybe navy trousers and an off cream blazer with white shirt. I think the last time I felt very conscious in the heels and that's why I was thinking of flats.Maybe I should try different heels.its not that they hurt my feet.but with nerves would I feel more relaxed in flats. But I do agree in heels I would walk with more confidence and hold myself differently!

Wear flats if that makes you more comfortable. I always wear flats to interviews. Don't see why people equate heels with being formal. Although if they give you more confidence then obviously go for it.

Always wear heels at an interview? Seriously?

What if you don't wear heels? I don't own one pair of heels. I've always wore flats at interviews and they have never stopped me from getting a job.

Wear whatever you feel comfortable in, once they look professional :)

I would think low heels or a flat shoe for an interview. From a male point of view I would feel that some one coming in with a set of high heels would be more into her fashion than her job.
P.S. I have 7 sisters, 3 of whom employ people and we all think this way.

I would always go with what you're most comfortable in. I don't do heels; I find them uncomfortable and I'm already tall enough. Wearing a nice pair of flats has never had anything to do with whether or not I've had success at interview.

Unless you're interviewing in the fashion industry, the focus will be more on your qualifications and ability to do the job than what type of shoes you wear.

Thanks for all the replies. I've decided on heels,no real high & they are comfortable, i feel like i hold myself better and walk with more confidence ( even if I'm shaking inside ). I don't mind wearing heels, don't wear them that often. But good to know people wearing flats as its an option id consider next time. I found the flats i had were not suitable or professional looking, more casual ballet shoes.

Get some pointed toe flats- they are my go-to flat shoe! I find ballet pumps too sloppy looking for anything other than casual wear, but a nice pointed toe flat looks smart and definitely looks better with work trousers than a round toe.

If you do decide to wear flats, I'd at least make sure that you're wearing a decent pair of flats - lightweight ballet pumps won't look well.

When I interview people, I always look at their shoes (and handbags for ladies). Shoes should be clean, polished (if possible), no stickers on soles etc. Same for handbags. Presentation matters.

I wore a pair of ballet flats from Next to an interview for an internship with a fairly well known company. My outfit and bag were smart, and the shoes were fairly decent looking (they didn't look cheaply made, nicely sown seams the little bow didn't look like cheap strings). It was lashing rain on that day, and I had walked a good 15 minutes from college to get to the building so I wasn't looking my best. But got the job in the end.

If you're more comfortable in flats, wear flats. Obviously they can't be cheap looking or flip flops, but it's better to wear nice flats than to stumble around in heels that you can't walk in.

If the outfit is well put together, your appearance is presentable and you ace the interview, the height of your shoes shouldn't be a deciding factor.

Thanks for all the replies. The flats i was going to wear are a lovely pair from clarkes , and not cheap looking, i was just unsure. But i think i will keep an eye out for smart flats that i would feel comfortable wearing to an interview.
