    Hi All,

I'm not sure if I am even posting this in the right place.

Just wondering if anyone attended the Law Society MOOC on Aviation Leasing & Finance and if so what you thought about it. I am a legal assistant for an aviation lessor and am trying to figure out whether it would be beneficial for me to enroll in the Certificate the Law Society are now enrolling for. Any feedback is welcome.

    Thank you!

    Hi Missmizz,

I can see you didn´t get a reply, but did you enroll in the course?
Not entirely related to your post but.....
I´m looking at doing a Masters in Finance and Economics next year and looking for info
on any MOOCs that could work as a pre-Masters guide to Finance??

    Any advice/info greatly appreciated

    Hi Anongeneric,

Yes I enrolled in and completed the Certificate and am currently enrolled in the Diploma which is due to end in the coming weeks.

There is a MOOC at present being run by the law society in Technology Law but that is the only one I am aware of I'm afraid.

From what I have heard, the MOOCs are a great introduction to the topics they cover and I would imagine very beneficial.

Hope this helps and if I hear of any other MOOCS commencing shortly I will let you know. You should register with the Law Society Diploma Centre and request information for any upcoming MOOCs. They may have one coming up in relation to Finance.

    Hey again Missmizz,

    Thanks for responding so quickly!!

I actually enrolled in a course on Coursera.org that is run in conjunction with the University of Michigan which is taught by Gautam Kaul (apparently a well known name in international academic circles).
It´s called ´Introduction to Finance´ And it runs for 15 weeks, you can do it for free or go for a Verified Certificate from Coursera/University of Michigan for 35 euros. I´m going the free route at the moment to see how I get on and if it looks like I am able to do it I may go for the Verified Certificate.

If you haven´t already you should check out coursera.org, udacity.com and edx.org.

They´re all tied in with very big internationally renowned universities (Stanford, Harvard, MIT, etc), although if it´s Law maybe sticking with the Law Society is best.

    Anyway Thanks for the response.

    All the Best

Does anyone know if last year's MOOC videos are available to watch anywhere? I missed the chance to do it last year but would like to check them out.

    Hey XxMCRxBabyxX,

It depends on the body running the MOOC. Have you contacted them to see if they are running the same MOOC again?
Some MOOCs are run on a ´At your own pace´ model, and tend to be up pretty much for good or until they restructure it in some way, while others try to recreate the classroom dynamic of only releasing lectures/information etc every week/2 weeks etc. and are then taken down

I´d get in contact with the body/institution running it if I was you.

    Regards

It's the Law Society running it and they have a new different one this year which I'm currently taking part in. I'll try give them an email but I have a feeling that they'll just try to convince me to sign up for the diploma!

Why not just do the diploma....?

    No money. Not qualified enough.

What qualifications do you need to do it and how much does it cost now ...?

Many companies in the industry run schemes that pay or loan employees money to pay for training and personal development like this.
It's a great course and might open few doors for you. The industry was crying out for a baseline qualification to help them sort through the thousands of CVs that land on their desks, as it stands this is the only formal qualification for the industry itself.
It could pay for itself many times over....

    Info here

You need to be a qualified solicitor or a professional with two years experience in the area. I'm neither - I'm still in the middle of my FE1s. That's also why I can't afford it. I know that it's great but it's not an option for me. That's why I'd just like to get a start with the MOOC videos.

The qualified solicitor clause isn't a deal breaker, they'll probably just want to let you know that it can get a bit heavy on the financial, legal and technical side and just make sure you know what you're letting yourself in for before you part with your cash. If you could persuade your company to pay the fees (or advance you a loan) you could probably get on it. It is one of the more popular diploma courses though (for obvious reasons) and does tend to be heavily subscribed.
Without wishing to pry, would a CU loan be an option...?

Look, I don't mean to be rude and I appreciate that you're trying to help but the diploma is just not a possibility for me atm for a lot of reasons. I just wanted to check out the MOOC videos as it is an area that I'm really interested in and I'd be able to watch them in my own time. It's a pity that I missed it last year. Maybe I'll get another chance to do the diploma or something like it sometime in the future!

Sorry for bringing up an old post, but how did you find the certificate? I worked for 7 months in the asset finance department of a big Dublin firm and spent a further 5 months on a secondment with a leasing company. Would the course be beneficial to me? Difficultly question to answer with brief information I realise but your thoughts on the course in general would be appreciated. Thanks
