Gear issues & clinking noises

    Hi all,

    I bought a Carrera Zelos in Halfords about 10 weeks ago & it was grand for the first few weeks. Brought it back to Halfords for the 6 week service & after getting it back I noticed that when changing gears on the back derailleur that there was a clinking/grinding noise & the gear didn't change properly. Toughed it out for a week until the weekend then brought it back to Halfords & got the bike back last week. Mon-Thurs no noticeable issues on Friday I noticed the noise again but the gears where still changing OK. Today though the noise is back & the gears aren't changing properly at all.

    I don't want to bring it back to Halfords because they keep the bike all week. Has anyone any idea what the problem is & how easy it would be for me to fix myself?

    I also noticed today there's a clicking noise in the pedal as well which wasn't there before, any ideas? Or can anyone recommend a good LBS in Clondalkin? Thanks

    Sounds like cable tension which is very easy to fix yourself. If you look at the rear dérailleur where the cable enters it, there will be a small plastic piece that you can spin right or left. This is to increase or decrease the tension on the cable.

    It is most likely to tight or to loose. You need to raise the rear wheel off the ground, or put the bike on a stand and start to pedal with you arm. Start to move the cable tensioner until the noise is gone. Once the noise is gone, shift though the gears up and down to make sure it is smooth for all of them.

    Once you are happy, you are ready to go.

    So I didn't have to do anything to the gears, they were OK on the way home on Monday & everyday since, changing no bother...until this morning, working up through the gears, loud grinding/clinking noise & the chain stopped turning. Got off the bike & the chain was stuck between the smallest cog & the frame. I think I may bring it back to Halfords

    That's your low derailleur limit screw set too low.

    Thanks, that's really helpful knowing my luck though I'd end up making a balls of it (based entirely on the one time I had to change an inner tube!)
