We currently have a parent going through chemotherapy. My husband and I are looking at travel insurance but are concerned about our parents preexisting health condition, in the event that something bad happens while we are away and we need to return.
Do travel insurance policies normally cover an immediate family members preexisting conditions? We are all, parents and ourselves, vhi policy holders.

    Thanks

Typically they exclude pre-existing conditions, below is the relevant clause in my AIG travel policy, you need to check the policy document if you've taken out a policy.

The Insurer shall not be liable for losses:

    .....

    (f) related to cancelling or cutting short the Insured Journey because of a medical condition or any illness which the Insured Person knew about or should have known about before booking the Insured Journey. This applies to the Insured Person, their spouse/Partner, father, mother, father- in-law, mother-in-law, brother, sister, brother-inlaw, sister- in-law, child, fiance(e), or close business associate of the Insured Person, a person the Insured Person is travelling with or any person the Insured Person was depending on for the Insured Journey

You mention that your parents and yourselves are VHI policy holders, I assume you mean that you have VHI medical insurance which is not really relevant in this situation since it's only travel insurance in your own name (not your parents) that will reimburse you if you have to cancel or curtail a foreign trip.

    Thank you.

Yes I just confirmed the above with VHI as we are probably going to use their multitrip policy.
The only reason I included the detail of the health policy was in the context of their covering pre-existing conditions for travel insurance purposes, but I was aware that it was specified as covered for the policy holder, and I hadn't read anything relating my FILs circumstances at the time.

I had a look at their T&Cs though and it is listed there.

    Thanks again.
