United airlines check-in

Don't know if this is a relevant forum but..

We went to check in for our flight there now and put all the details in only for the website to say "we can't check you in goto the airport".

What does this mean? Why is the site doing this?

We were in America before with them and when we were coming back they overbooked the flight and only let people who checked in on. I am quite worried that we will not get a seat because of this.

What do we do?

I have looked and there are already people checked in. So how is it not working?

I think this just means that you can't check in online as they have to verify your details as the airport. This has happened to me previously. I couldn't check in online (either on the VWP or as a J-1 Visa holder) but my OH has a Green Card and he can check in online.

Go to the airport as usual and check in.

Do you mean only people who checked in online we allowed to board?? Every airline will require you to check in to board the plane, but this can be done in the airport.

What is the traffic like down there?

We wee originally gonna leave our house (north of ni) at about 7 hours before our flight but now we are leaving 8 hours before.

Is that not a bit rediculous? Our brother says theres a one way lane with resurfacing or something? Is it actually that bad? I personally don't see a need.

Depends on what time your flight is and how far you are from Dublin. You need to be at the airport 3 hours before your flight to the US. Check in, security and then customs and immigration plus US airlines tend to start boarding 50 minutes before flight time.

Well we want to be there 4 hours before.

We haven't done it before. My mother kind of thinks that we can arrive like 2 hours before and just shoot on through. My aunt says she went three hours before and almost missed the flight. Hard to believe.

We are 160 miles from Dublin.

Believe your aunt!! The airport is busy busy these days and it's better to get there and potentially have time to kill rather than risk missing your flight.

But what the hell takes 4 hours lol???

We are just gonna go ahead and leave at 5:30. As you say its better to be there early rather than late.

You definitely need to be there three hours before your flight, four is excessive but it is better to be safe than sorry I guess.

anyway, it's more than likely an extra document check - nothing to worry about.

The extra time at the airport for US flights is because the flights are often at busy times for security (so you have a normal busy security check to get through), you often have to check in at the desk, and then once you're through security, you have to go through another security queue for US flights, and then US immigration queue. You definitely need more than 2 hours, maybe not quite as much as 4.

If you're going from Dublin, the Dublin airport Android app tells you how long security and immigration queues are. If you have time, check the details of your flight a week early, and get an idea what the queues are like at that kind of time.

Do you have any onward connecting flights? Sometimes online check in won't work in that scenario (it didn't for me with recent flights to Washington State on BA).

Either way, don't cut it fine at the airport. 3 hours minimum for the US flights.
