    Hey lads,

The steam summer sale and recent humble bundles have hit me hard already and I've bought loads of stuff (~60 games). Unfortunately I'm trying to play them off a crappy old laptop that overheats and shuts down trying to play terraria :(. So having saved up a bit of $$$ lately I wanna splurge and get myself a fairly decent rig. (Noodles and beans on toast always were my favorite foods anyway.)

I should mention that this will be my first build and I'm starting from scratch so I've no peripherals etc. With this in mind I can scrounge up a bit of extra dosh (having two kidneys is playing life on easy mode anyway) if its gonna make a decent dent in the price/performance ratio.

    So without further ado:

    1. What is your budget?
    [€800-1000]

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer?
[Gaming/Internet] I'd like to be able to play games on ultra settings for the next few years but, I play games like Starcraft 2, Total war franchise, battlefield 4, batman franchise etc. if that makes any difference. In particular, I'd like to be able to play the upcoming witcher game/far cry 4 on ultra if possible.

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows?
    [Yes]

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer?
    [Nothing]

    5. Do you need a monitor?
    [Yes]

5a. If yes, what size do you need.
[I'm currently playing on a 17' laptop screen so anything will be an improvement, but I suppose the best that can fit into the budget]

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future?
    [N/A]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals?
[Keyboard/Mouse/Wireless Card/Speakers/anything else I might need for a brand new rig]

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking?
    [Yes]

    8. How can you pay?
    [Bank Transfer/Debit Card/Laser]

    9. When are you purchasing?
    [ASAP]

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based?
[Offaly, should be fine building it but I can always ask here if I get stuck]

Sorry for the long post (I like to hear myself type), can't wait to see my rig-to-be.

    Cheers,
    Batfastard

    Any suggestions?

I know there's two similar threads but they don't seem to have the peripherals I'd need to start from scratch:
(boards.ie/vbulletin /showthread.php?t=2057229853 AND boards.ie/vbulletin /showthread.php?t=2057233407). Sorry can't post links yet so I removed the "http: //www." at the start of the link.

Should I just get one of their builds and add on the mouse, keyboard etc. and if so could you also suggest a good gaming keyboard/mouse as I don't have a clue about which are good or not. I'm still using my laptops touchpad :S. I'd probably need a wireless card too.

Also is the "rechner zusammenbau" the build option for hardwareversand because I'd like to build it myself for the "experience" :P.

For mouse the deathadder has been recommended a lot here and any keyboard would do but if you get it off hwvs it might be qwertz not qwerty. And "rechner zusammenbau" is the option for them to build it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

Yes it is the assembly option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

with a monitor and Windows in budget it will lower specs of the actual pc obviously. Unless you get your Windows for cheap then can squeeze in an r9 290.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭batfastard13

I can scrape together an extra 200 to cover the monitor and other peripherals if it'll make a big difference to the performance? I'd rather do that now and get the extra oomph than regret it later.

I was planning on using that reddit software swap to get windows....seems like the best option?

Btw which version would you recommend for gaming?

That is a rough draft. Without windows ,you can drop the SSD and cover some of the cost of windows. Or you can get the cheap copies of windows. Lots of treads on here about it.

I'm on windows 7 myself, some people say windows 8 helps performance in New games. Others find it annoying to use. It's a personal preference really. So that is your shout.

The keyboard get somewhere else hardwareversand use German layouts.

    Total: 899,23 € + 6.99€ shipping = 906.22€

That monitor was unknown delivery date and I couldn't find it on geizhals :(.

    Is this the same?
    hardwareversand.de//en/56+cm+%2822%29+/74645/LG+Flatron+22EA53VQ-P.article

Finally if I was to say I'd put up the 1000 for the budget without the monitor/keyboard/mouse would the extra 100 make a difference performance wise (starting to go down a slippery slope :P)

Sorry for all the questions and thanks for all the help! :)

Get yourself familiar with geizhals.de discount site. It is where I sourced them prices. Will save you some money.

If you want swap out the case for your own look/style.

Scratch that you have been on geizhals.de. and ask away. Will look up the monitor now.

    As for the extra hundred.
The Gpu is high end and best value for money on a 1080p gaming rig. So that can stay as is.

Personally I'd add a few euro to the motherboard and swap it for an asrock "h97" pro. 71 euro. So not that much more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

    LG 22MP65HQ-P try that.

It's only a few euro more. Basically the IPs panel is newer tech. its a clearer picture and does not fade to black at angles.

Like on your old laptop when you looked at the screen from an angle or had to tilt to see it clear because the screen darkened. IPs panel cancels that out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭batfastard13

I switched out that board for the h97 and that monitor looks good! :D

Do you mind me asking how that motherboard is improved over the first? I can see how this could get addicting!

I'm ordering the keyboard and mouse off amazon ~37 for the deathadder and ~82 for the logitech g710 keyboard.

Will I need speakers for the pc and do I need to get any extra cables etc? Also is there a wireless card you would recommend as I won't be able to hook up an ethernet cable directly to the pc?

The delivery date on the hard drive has changed to "Delivery late, new date requested". Still okay to order?

If I order that list I posted above with the monitor added and the motherboard switched out will it be ready to assemble and then play once it's delivered? Can't wait!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

The h97 is the latest released motherboard , last year's is the h87. The h97 has some newer sata e options. Basically I wouldn't upgrade from a h87 to a h97 myself. But as you are building from scratch you may as well get the latest.

TP-LINK TL-WN722N 8 euro. USB adaptor. Has a big range. And good signals. Will pick up through concrete blast proof walls so your basement dungeon be no bother. Easy to move from one pc to another.

I have speakers myself but use a headset most times if gaming. Only really use the speakers when I am heading out and have some Cyprus hill "when the **** goes down you better get ready" blasting. Up to you really. But you will need a headset or speakers. Monitor is a no no for sound.

You can swap out that HDD to a Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 1TB, SATA 6Gb/s. In stock .

What is the basket situation now.

That hdd you mentioned before is back in stock again so I'll stick with that unless that new one is better?

I'll need a set of speakers too then, any recommendations? Also that corsair psu is now out of stock :/.

People need to stop buying my stuff! :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

    Be quiet 7 600w ... 68 euro.

    Keep the western digital HDD.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭batfastard13

    Great! Swapped that PSU out.

So am I ready to order now? That's everything I need for it to function isn't it?

    Thanks for all the help!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

DVD drive? Some people don't use them anymore. Noise.... 15 euro ish. You will need one if you intend buying your games in a shop and not on steam.

You can buy external DVD drives but more expensive..

    Obviously you will need windows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭batfastard13

Yeah I have one included already in the cart. Have a heap of old games that I still want to be able to play :P. Cool gonna go ahead and bite the bullet! :D

    Anything else before I do?

Thanks again SterlingArcher for all your help!

I know It's a curve ball, but maybe look at the I7 4790. Latest CPU out. Step up. Will be an extra 50. If your budget too tight forget about it.

    And the rest you're welcome.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭batfastard13

If it's worth the step up I'd be willing to go for it! I saw a few posts about it but wasn't sure if it was good for gaming? Obvs it is if you're saying to have a look!

Just read a review there and it was highly recommended so it defo looks like its worth the extra few bob.

If it were me. Considering your budget. I'd be aiming for an I7. Better future proofing(and I hate using them words). Consoles have 8 cores now. Games in the future will better use them.

That said an Xeon is a great CPU. It's a server chip. basically a work horse that gets the best quality control. 8 cores hyper threading. It's an I7 by another name and cheaper. Either way you won't go wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭batfastard13

PC ordered.... and now the wait begins! :D Went with the i7 after!

I wont be able to think of anything else until it comes!! ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

I wont be able to think of anything else until it comes!! ;)

    That's what she said.

Yeah while you wait. Look up some vids on youtube. Get yourself somewhat familiar putting the parts together.

Hey lads got my stuff today! Slowly getting through building it.

Only one problem: the graphics card is slightly too big for the case. It's just about too tight and the end is pressing against the hdd trays in a way that prevents me from seating it in the slot

As far as I see it I have one of two options:
    a) buy a new case and wait for that to come or
    b) mod the case a little by cutting the hdd tray and lose one/two spaces for hdds

Any recommendations on what to do?

If I do cut into the hdd trays will it create any unforeseen problems for me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 936 ✭✭✭bassey

Cut the hard drive trays, if possible try not to damage to the sliding lock mechanism, I'd say it's rare enough that someone would have every drive tray populated in a desktop

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭batfastard13

    Hey lads,

Just an update to let you know that clipping the hdd bay worked.

For future reference, if anyone else has this problem, all I had to do was clip the lip of the hdd bay that was blocking the card. (I covered the board with non-static material so as not to let any of the metal clippings hit it and potentially fry it but the safest way would be to remove the board altogether first). The gpu slid in fairly easily after that and the pc booted up first time with no problems! :D

Thanks for all the help lads, I'm now off to install the OS, drivers etc. and then test it out ;)

Hopefully everything runs smooth from here!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

My bad homo slice. If you look up the antec one benchmarks you will see it beats out cases that cost 20 Euro more, and all cases in its price range . Silence and cooling wise it is really good value. But , I did not know the gigabyte Gpu would have trouble fitting and for this I apologize.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭batfastard13

    Hey, no worries.

The gpu was only out by about a mm or so and it was only a 5 min job to clip the lip of the hdd bay. The case is really nice and quiet and everything is working fine. Still installing drivers etc but once I'm done with that I'm looking forward to giving it a good run.....

.....I've a feeling that not much else is getting done this weekend ;) :P

tldr: you've nothing to apologize for and I appreciate all your help!
