You'll have to build a box from one floor to the next then install a smaller box inside this one.

Think like you're building a mini elevator, the small box can be hauled up with a rope attached to the top, looped over a pulley and use something like a clothes line winch to wind and unwind.

    thanks Calibos.

All - I need something that isnt a box as above due to limited space on the satirwell, Im primarily looking for ideas for a rails system that I could use .

It is to rise 12 ft approx from the bottom of a staircase to the landing. When at the bottom I need to be able to fold in the tray to allow space on the stairs.

    All recommendations welcome

    Google "Henderson rails"
You could fix the rail to the wall and use the door rollers as guides for the folding shelf/tray.
A pulley and clothes line for raising and lowering and bobs yer uncle.

I thought you were going vertically from one floor to the next.

Perhaps you could adapt a stair lift, I've seen them advertised second hand for as little as €400.
