Weekend car hire from Donegal to Galway

    Dear all,

We would like to travel by rental car from Inishowen to Galway City on Sunday 11 August 2014.

Naively I assumed we could pick a car up from Derry Airport and drop it off the same day or the following day in Galway. It seems, however, that this is not possible between the Republic and the Six Counties.

The next option was to try from Letterkenny, but the car hire company (under the umbrella of "Enterprise") does not open on Saturday and Sunday. Accordingly, the Letterkenny option would mean hiring a car for four days at 70 euros + per day until the Monday, since the Letterkenny option does not allow us to drop the car off in Galway until the Monday morning.

Last option before resorting to starting a new thread here was to check options from Donegal Airport. This alternative does provide a weekend car rental service, but getting to Donegal Airport from Inishowen to pick up a car on either the Saturday or Sunday entails a cross-county trek involving lifts, buses and taxis.

We have tried the usual online agents such as Auto Europe and Kayak, but thus far our only route seems to be renting a car from Letterkenny for four days, (just to drive to Galway), or schlepping all the way to Donegal Airport from Ballyliffin.

Any advice or suggestions would be welcome. Many Thanks for taking the time to read this message!

Why do you need a car? You could get a bus from Letterkenny to Galway.

Ah, thanks for the suggestion KB2. I had searched online for buses a while ago and nothing came up. Now thanks to your suggestion I see Feda Bus and Bus Eireann both pass through Letterkenny en route to Galway!

We will likely take the bus option, although we're tourists, so we were hoping to take the car rental option so that we would be able to stop off at a few places and see more stuff along the way. We are on quite a tight schedule since we have to be in Athlone early Monday afternoon to start a Shannon cruise. It would have been nice to see a bit more of the Wild Atlantic Way and perhaps pass through Connemara, but looks like we will have to save that for another day.

Once you get to Galway there are plenty tour companies will do day trips to Connemara, the Cliffs, the islands and other sites. It's much more relaxing than driving and everyone including the person who was to be the driver can enjoy the views.

I like the freedom of a car rental myself but it really doesn't make a lot of sense in your particular situation. If you take the early bus from Letterkenny you'll have plenty of time to enjoy Galway city which is lovely in summer.
