1996 B4 Passat Tdi, what are they like?

Got offered a B4 passat tdi with 150k on it for free (someone wants space). It has no Nct and a few issues - drivers window is jumping out of track, brakes are a bit dodgy, maybe one shock in the back is gone, power steering is squealing. other than that it is a solid car that starts first tip and there is not single spot of rust on it anywhere. I am just wondering if it would be worth getting it right for the nct. What are these cars like in general?

Imo it is worth spending €50 on putting it through the NCT and them telling you what it fails on. You can then price the repairs and make an informed decision on whether it is worth fixing or not.

BTW on a 18 year old car judging it on it's own merits and condition is more relevant than on model reputation.

True. That said, along with Ventos they are supposed to be the last of the bulletproof VWs that could easily be driven past 250k with no major mechanical failures. I am just wondering if that reputation is hype? The engine on the one I got offered is as dry as a bone, not a bad sign after 18 years i suppose.

All the conversion boys want that for its 1z engine and simple wiring - easy tdi to squeeze a lot more power from and drop into a jetta or a corrado. If its mechanically good, I'd check out some of the vw forums:)

About 90bhp stock. About the same as the old TD Avensis, but the passat would be a good bit heavier and a lot more economical. It won't stick you to the seat, that's for sure.

I must check out a few forums alright. Not looking to felt spec it. What could comfortably be squeezed out of the engine do you think?

AFAIK you can go 110-120 anyway with just injectors. anymore than that and you're looking at upgrading the turbo.

if you spent as little as a grand you could see 200bhp, then you could paint it matt black, give them springs a cut, paint the headlights continental yellow, keep it classy, like....

Most money will come out of selling that to someone with a golf 2/3, vento, jetta or corrado who wants to tdi it, if its complete and mechanically good and has the 1Z engine code, that'll give you the best return
