Hi I have just done a level 7 degree in Computer Engineering and i am heading back in September to do level 8 add-on year in Software Engineering (honours bachelor degree).

I have been on BTEA the past 4 years and have been signing on during the summer months.

I have just found a job for the summer about 10 weeks and will be singing off then signing back on a few (3 maybe) weeks before commencing college in September.

BTEA participants who are progressing to the next year of their course or who are progressing from second level to third level approved undergraduate qualifications or from undergraduate qualification to BTEA eligible postgraduate courses will have their BTEA reinstated from the commencement of the new academic year irrespective of whether they were in receipt of an unemployment payment for the summer period. All participants must supply written confirmation from school/college/institute that they have registered as a full-time day student for the new academic year. Participants are also required to notify the Department of cessation of participation on a course.

I have read the above but my question is.

Is moving from level 7 degree to do a level 8 add-on year considered as progressing to the next year of my course?

I have moved from level 5(fetac) to level 6 and from level 6 to level 7 over the past few years without break and without any stoppage of BETA but i did not work during any of the summers in between

they can be a difference when moving to a L8.
when I did mine I got the grant which auto continued from HC to ordinary degree, but when it came to continuing on to the L8 Hons degree I had to reply it was viewed as new course for some reason. even tho it was direct follow on

The Level 8 add-on is the only way i can progress. Its the next step in the course.

No information at all regarding add-on year and BTEA and summer work anywhere online.

I sent an email two weeks ago asking the question but heard nothing back at all.

You have to re-apply for BTEA as it is a new course - and you will qualify and get it.

I'd also say you can work for the entire summer and still get the BTEA in September - however I'd speak to the individual in the local SWO who deals with btea applications to confirm they are OK with this.

I have reapplied, I got the form when i was signing back on after my exams but before i knew i was getting a few weeks work. I'm starting work Monday and i will ring the sw office to confirm if i'm ok to work and still get btea.

For anyone interested I was in contact with someone in the welfare and I am allowed to work for the summer and as long as I am signed back on (at least a week) before i return to college this will not affect my BTEA in september and should be switched back without any hassle.
