Subwoofer in E46?

I'm interested in getting a subwoofer for my E46. I have the bog standard setup - Business CD (Alpine) and 6 speakers.
A friend of mine has suggested on extending the cables from the rear speakers to the sub.

Don't really want to change the head unit, so this is out of question.

    Is it possible at all?

A line level convertor with a remote output wired to the rear speakers then install the subs, did it to both my housemates e46's , takes 30 mins to install and the battery is in the boot so subs are handy.
