Impossibe to calculate accuratley. An example is Terminal 5. Gates 501 to 592. There are numbers missing e.g. 571, 574, 577, 578, 579. Terminal 5D yet to be built.
I would say all stands will take 1 widebody or 2 narrows that are in active service. You can park up to 3 narrow bodies on these gates particularly when there are disruptions and they are not in service that day.

Add plenty of remote storage space and maintenance space.

The 186 stands is slightly misleading, anyone who flies out of LHR regularly can spot closed off taxiways storing BA 747s and the BA maintenance area near Bath Road/Cranebank stores at least 20 aircraft daily - I remember seeing a figure of nearly 250 at max.

Nice to see Dublin in the top 5 destinations especially compared to the other 4 in there :).

What is the max that can safely be held above heathrow?

What is the max that can safely be held above heathrow?

So there's four stacks/holds at LHR - Biggin (BIG), Bovingdon (BNN), Lambourne (LAM) and Ockham (OCK). Plus two designated holds Chiltern (CHT) and Epsom (EPM) which are rarely ever used unless for example one of the four primary holds was unusable.

At maximum (critical) 64 aircraft could be in all four - however I've never heard it go above 30.

I flew into LHR on September 12th 2001. There were a lot of (wide body) aircraft there that day. Nose to tail on every taxiway they could spare. It was a very sobering sight and one I will never forget.

Any chance you were in the air on 9/11?

Yep, I was on my way back from AMS. Watched the second plane hit the towers on the screen in ops, while the company tried to contact our crews in NY (we used to stay at WTC, some of the guys would have gone down there for brekkie still). Arrived home to see the towers collapsing on sky news.

Incomprehensible kind of day. For some reason my memory lied to me that Britain closed its airspace for a day or two also. But then I was 12.

Would anybody have pictures of Heathrow on 9/11 when planes were grounded? Would be interesting to see how much aircraft were grounded in Heathrow on the day!
