Have a 08 VOLkswagen Golf 1.4 petrol! When car going at average speed can hear what sounds like a purr sound from exhaust pipe at back of car! Noise dulls as car slows down! Can't be heard when car stationary! Car driving fine and no warning lights on dash! Booked into garage on Monday! Garage reckons could be loose exhaust but won't know for sure till see car up on lift!

Has anyone ever experienced this and was it costly to repair! Hope to drive a long journey over weekend!?

    Thanks

Are you sure it's not a growl from a rear wheel bearing?

I was getting a mk5 1.4 golf ready for NCT two weeks ago it had a noisy exhaust on start up and low speed. Dropped it into an exhaust place and they couldn't find any holes in it. They said they've had quite a few mk5's in with exhaust noise but no holes in the ehaust. I would guess that some of the internal baffles are breaking down in the exhaust. It passed the NCT no problem.
