Simple question really, why should I head to Galway instead of say, UCD?

You didnt mention the degree you want to do. That might make one university more important than the other. Might.

Galway is a small city, and more importantly not Dublin. The university is a 5 minute walk from the city centre, and you are likely to live close to or in the city centre.

Rents will be significantly cheaper in Galway. It's also far more craic, if you're into that sort of thing. I always feel way safer in Galway than Dublin city centre.

I'm going into 3rd year Maths in NUIG. The reasons why you should go to NUIG are:

    - Galway is a lovely city. There are always lots of cool and interesting things going on around town, and it's friendly-sized. If you're a sociable person, it's likely that you'll have a fairly close-knit, supportive group of friends by the time you get to this point in whatever course you do. Which is great. I've been to a few bigger cities and I've sometimes had the feeling that it would be easy to get "lost in the crowd" there.

    - The societies and clubs are fantastic. I guess that goes without saying, because the University are always promoting the hell out of all of that stuff, but it doesn't hurt to give them a bit more promotion. Maybe we'll meet one another through some random society next year, who knows. :P

Those are the two main reasons why you should go. Course-wise, honestly, if I had known I wanted to do Maths when I filled out my CAO, I probably would've gone elsewhere. Most likely Trinity, because that's "the place" to go to study Maths, but hey, here I am. That's the way the cookie crumbles, and I'm very happy with it (also, Galway is a lot cheaper than Dublin in terms of rent and overall cost of living).

If you know exactly what you want to study, and you know where the best place is to study it, then go there. If you have an idea of what you want to study, but you aren't totally sure (i.e. you are among the majority of people), then I would suggest doing something closely related to it in Galway. Academically, it's a sound decision, and more importantly, it's a very easy place to get along and enjoy yourself. I guarantee you'll have a great time.

Hope that helps. If there's any other information about the city or the University which I can help you out with, just shoot me a PM! :)

I hope to go to galway to study science this year. I could have done the same course in Dublin but I just didn't feel happy going there. I just felt Galway would be safer for some reason but that is just me. Also if I had chosen Dublin the bus would have picked me up and dropped me off at the front door at weekends Its a little bit harder getting to Galway but will worry about that when leaving cert results come out in August

I would echo everything the above posters said. Both UCD and NUIG are excellent universities so I dont think you'll regret whatever choice you make. Where do you live at the moment, would you be able to live at home if you went to one over the other? Are the courses very similar?

I don't know much about UCD but comparing Dublin to galway you get cheaper rents, don't need a car or bus to get around and shops like aldi, lidl, tesco and Dunne's are all near each other. There would be less selection of shops in galway but there is enough to keep me happy. You only get chuggers asking for money too.

Dublin will cost more to live in but it would probably be easier to find a part time job in Dublin over Galway, if that's something the OP is relying on.

You really need to visit both campuses and spend time in each city to see what you like the best. I think it would be very unwise to move to a new city for four years without doing that.

As others have already said what course you intend on doing will be a big factor. Costs will be cheaper in Galway and it is more compact than Dublin so easier to get around

Agree with previous posts, and I guess, it depends on your current location, e.g. if it will be cheaper for you to commute there, or if you are living already within an easy distance of NUIG, it would make sense to attend there, (assuming that the course you plan to do is available).
