Can you use bewleys Java like an instant coffee or do you have to use a cafetiere?

If it's one of these - http://bewleys.com/bewleys-at-home/our-coffees/fresh-coffee-range - then yeah, it will have to be brewed by some method. Cafetiere, filter, or coffee machine of some sort.

you could still use it like cowboy coffee, just throw the grounds into a cup with some water. after a while the grounds sink to the bottom

You could just brew it in any container then strain it through a sieve or similar.

Put the coffee into a mug, pour in hot water, after 30 seconds use a spoon and scoop off the stuff at the top, the rest will settle to the bottom. Works for me (I've an Aeropress now though).
