Heat related problem

I'm running a self built PC with 8 core AMD 8350 CPU @ 4.ghz, Asus sabretooth mobo. The type of work I do often sees all 8 cores maxed out running at 100% for lengthy periods, e.g. hours. The CPU is not overclocked, and I've designed the air flow with two intake fans low and at the front, and three exhaust fans, two at the top, one top back. Today, with the office warmer than usual, the PC has been turning off once all cores are maxed for about 10 minutes. The PSU is a corsair TX850, so I'm guessing the issue is CPU heat related.

Currently, I have the case open on the desktop, such that CPU heat can escape vertically with the help of the CPU fan, but I'm thinking I need some more serious cooling. I'm also wondering whether my airflow design is dodgy, and suspect that the PC normally living under a desk isn't helping this.

Any suggestions on upgrading the cooling or rectifying the heat issue any other way?

Wondering would a liquid CPU cooler such as the Corsair H105 solve my woes?

    What is your CPU cooler?

    What is your CPU cooler?

Currently it is the AMD cooler that shipped with the CPU. Probably not great in terms of air flow, because on my upright case the fan is directing the at the side of the case rather than up towards one of the exhausts.

What temperature does the CPU reach when it shuts down? It is warmer than usual so cooling could be a problem. Any cheap aftermarket cooler would do, like this for example http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thermalright-Rev-A-Cooler-Silent-Socket/dp/B008YTUN38/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403262372&sr=8-1&keywords=macho+hr. This is an excellent cooler for the price.

Or a cheaper alternative would be a Hyper 212 evo from Cooler Master (on Amazon too).

Also it might help if you undervolt your CPU. No doubt it has headroom to do so.

As a very simple and temp fix. Get a regular desk fan if u have one and aim it into the cpu, seeing as you have the side off anyways.
see if that fixes the issue first.
also check for dust in the case too.
download software to monitor temps as well.

No sure as the temps haven't got that high since leaving it open on my desk. Lid open, on top of my desk rather than under it, it idles at 32C and hovers around 77C-78C under load. Ambient temp under the desk will be higher less airflow for exhausts, and with lid on. TJ max is 90C, and I'm guessing it powers off when it hits this, so it possibly hit that this morning.

Outside of cost, any reason to stay with air cooled rather than going with a closed water cooled option? Thermalright HR-02 reviews suggest it is a great fan, but bulky and awkward to install.

Not much of a difference between high end air and closed loop water coolers (in fact they are outperformed by high end air coolers). A custom loop is really expensive and for aesthetics more than performance.

A simple cheap Cooler Master hyper 212 evo will do the trick if you don't want to spend much.

Reason I asked which cooler is because I had a feeling you were on stock one. Never a good idea using an AMD chip on stock cooler for "extensive" use.

Was going to suggest same as bloodbath. Hyper evo. It is a cheap enough but good quiet cooler. This is the way to go. I wouldnt recommend an expensive cooler when you nor we are 100% sure that is the exact probelm and you may need a budget for a new CPU. So get the cheaper one hopefully that resolves the problem.

Cooler Master hyper 212 evo ordered up. Thanks for all the feedback.

Installed the hyper 212 evo this morning, as amazon reviews suggested, quite an involved task which ended up taking about an hour, not least due to pretty awful instructions.

That said, I've had the CPU at full tilt for the last 20 minutes, and the highest temp reached was 55%, albeit at a lower ambient today than last week. Looks like a good piece of kit that does the job well, and in future I'll be installing it as part of the build.

I just taught I should point out you should never let an amd cpu go over 60 degrees as prolonged use over this temperature will damage the cpu. The sensor is read incorrectly by windows so 60 degrees is approximately 100 degrees when its adjusted correctly.

Thanks for that. Just googled it and got similar info on Tom's Hardware. Will have CoreTemp sound the alarms at 58c.

Its designed to slow down to save itself if it gets too hot.
I also think and chips run slightly hotter too.
keep an eye on it and see if you can clear airflow in case any more too.

Just out of curiosity what case do you have?

Case is a Corsair Carbide 300R tower. Plenty of space inside, and what I thought would have been a decent air flow design. I reckon the main problem is that the computer sits under a desk with sides that doesn't have an easy escape path for hot air.

i have mine in a similar place and i am planning to add some holes to aid airflow. Hahah.

And a week later with the lid back on and the computer upright rather than flat, highest cpu temperature reached has been 53c. The PC hasn't been off at all during that time and has seen some heavy use. Thanks again for the suggestion, the hyper 212 evo seems to do the job nicely.
