I think you'll have to pay tax for may too

You are only liable for motor tax for the time of ownership of the vehicle, rounded to the month unit; So no matter how long it might be out of tax, you will only pay from the month you registered it in your name.

Flip side of it is that if you register a vehicle with a few days to go on the month, you'll have to pay tax for the full length of it...I'd say you'll have to pay for May as well for the sake of these three days. Use the motortax.ie website, it will know exactly what to make you pay for :)

i cant seem to find out how much i need to pay without putting in my insurence details, i dont have the car insured yet because im still driving my other car, is there a way around this to find out the final figure im looking at

To be honest, any number will do. But you could just use the number on your current policy.
If you change cars on that policy the number will remain the same.

RF100A describes on the back what is due.
f the ownership of the vehicle has changed since it was last taxed, you are NOT liable for the arrears period from the expiry of the last tax disc to the end of the month immediately preceding the date of sale.
The end of the month immediately preceding the date of sale in this instance is the 30th April 2014.

Look up the relevant table (under "Motor Tax Rates" and either by registration number or basis of assessment) on the Motortax website and you can work it out.
Disc will start 1st of June + 1 months arrears for May.

Point to remember next time if you can: officially "buy" a car on the first of the month.

Some unscrupulous people would transfer the vehicle into somebody else's name on July 1st, and then back to their own name in order to only pay tax from July onwards..........

Thats exsakli what im going to do but wont bother changing it back just keep it on the gfs name

Then you are adding an extra owner to the car to avoid one month of arrears. Hardly makes sense when you weigh up the advantages vs the disadvantages.

Wel im planning on owning the car for a few years to come so that aint bothering me, i couldnt even tell you how many owners it currently has as i never asked or checked

your gf will have to insure it too

You are in the minority in that case! It's one question that 90% of people will ask when looking to buy a car. The extra owner may not matter if the car is an older car and already has several owners but for a newer car where you are the second owner then in my opinion you are better off paying the arrears.

Wel its a 95 so i think im good on that 1.

She will be insuring it because im under her on the policy. But she dosent have to imsure because she has insured a car that wss in my name before
