I am moving into a new job where I have been offered a Opel Insignia or Ford Mondeo. Mileage to be advised but travel is around Dublin & near Leinster areas so no significant long distances. I have no idea on which car would be the best option. Which vehicle should I select ? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Purely because you'll struggle to get a Mondeo, the Insignia.

Make sure it's at least an SC to get the NAV and spec the upgrade 17" wheels.

The Mondo is a great bus but I sure like the interior of those Insignias.

Would you like to be stabbed to death or burned to death....

Might be easier and cheaper to get a Mondeo as it's coming to it's life, whereas the facelift insignia isn't too long out (although I believe a new version is in the pipeline). The only thing is, if you get a new Mondeo, it won't be long until it becomes "outdated" as the new model is due out towards the end of the year. Whether that bothers you or not.....

I would go for an Insignia as the Mondeo on offer im sure is the 1.6 diesel

Insignia without question. Those Mondeos are very long in the tooth at this stage and they weren't anything special even when new IMO.

I'd have to disagree with the lads, the Mondeo is simply superb to drive, I very much doubt the Insignia comes close. It has a very good (by the low standards set by four cylinder diesels) engine if you get the 2.0 TDCi, the ride, handling and steering feel as excellent for the type of car, the controls are beautifully weighted, there's acres of space, it's very good value these days, it's reliable, it's quiet, it still looks well to my eyes, the seats are comfortable and the quickclear windscreen is a great idea on frosty mornings.

The only things that let it down are it is due to be replaced soon, but more importantly the interior does feel cheap, especially on lower spec models. It's as cheap feeling as an Avensis inside really. Otherwise, it's still a great car.

Insignia. The mondeo is rotten inside and you'll probably get stuck with a 1.6 tdci

    Insignia!

Much nicer drive (except for the too long top gear), nicer interior.

If your going to be landed with the base diesel engine, the Insignia is a very tired old dog.
I found it also very small inside compared to the mondeo. Rear doors are very odd shaped, so difficult to fit stuff in the back.

If the Insignia is tired then the Mondeo died of exhaustion some time ago. I much prefer the Mondeo to drive if you're off a motorway but the Insignia is a great cruiser and if both are base spec the Insignia is a nicer place to be and has a more powerful engine. I think the facelift with a nice set of wheels looks well too. If the spec/engine choice is more open I'd probably go for the Mondeo but it's worth trying both. There are nicer cars in that class though.

Ford are really pushing Mondeos towards company car buyers these days, they even introduced a Zetec Business spec for them which includes Sat Nav afaik.

i wasn't a fan of the insignia originally but I've seen a more recent example and must say it looked well enough.

Was the business edition ever introduced over here though. I never seen one in the flesh - whereas the UK seem to have them, the only addition over the Zetec like you said is the Sat Nav lcd centre console.

OP like most company cars, it's the 1.6 unit that would be offered, which you should stay away from - not enough poke for a car of that size.

Yeah seems to be just called the Zetec over here but has the upgraded Sat Nav and parking sensors fitted. I'd say R.O.R would have better details.

Ya must be, colleague at work has one with the front/rear sensors and Sat Nav, motorcheck brings it up as just a Zetec

Nice change from the 'Executive' offering Ford had as a business car.

How long has the 1.6D been available??

Since the Mk4 facelift was introduced, very late 2010.

Oh dear, probably i lost interest at that point..

Officially called the Zetec Revised, but no one ever uses that name as it's stupid.

Gained Navigation over the Zetec, but surprisingly, lost Front & Rear Parking sensors

I was checking stock for a 1.6 Graphite yesterday for an urgent requirement, and told it wasn't looking good at all. Nothing available within a week, but didn't bother to check whether there was anything on the way for July. Can't order Mondeo's with options now - only what's scheduled to be built for stock orders.

The 1.6Tdci is surprisingly sprightly in the Mondeo (and S-Max!). Zippy around town, but does suffer a bit at higher speeds - not much left when you plant the right foot at 100km, but would be OK for urban and Motorway - wouldn't fancy it much for overtaking on backroads.

Is this because it's nearing the end of it's life? When's a replacement due?

It's been due a change for the past couple of years, but kept being delayed.

New Mondeo is expected around October for dealer demo models, but realistically a Jan 2015 car.

It's been on sale in the US for the last two years but called the Fusion there.

Hi all, thanks for everybody's replies, this is very useful information, I plan to test drive both and will update the thread soon with the option I select.

According to Bob - its a bloody good car

I dont get all the negativity for the mondeo, its a great car and so nice to drive.

Both cars are quite close, but if its space you are looking for, there's only one choice
