Yet again Jimmy Magee is off to the World Cup on the back of our TV licence money.Isn't it time he retired or is RTE the home for the bewildered?
I am not being ageist but surely it is time to put some of these "national treasures" out to grass and give their jobs to some bright energetic new graduates who might do an equally good if not better job.......

I'd rather read Jimmy Magee's writings on matches than read your thread on Jimmy Magee's writings on matches.

There's something amusing about Jimmy Magee's style of commentary for the last few years. The way he'll list off various bits of trivia about teams or players while the ball is in midfield, then slip into a stupefied silence when any goalmouth action occurs because he can't follow what's going on.

I hate when Jimmy Magee is commentating because he never gets excited when a goal is scored, so I always think it might have been disallowed until I see the score change on the screen.

Jimmy rang me at home once; he thought I was someone else. We had a laugh about it. He is a chatty man.

We're a tiny little island with feck all money,Ireland aren't even in the World Cup yet Rte is the only country broadcasting every single World Cup match. There's something seriously fcuked up there.

At least they're not spending money to send commentators and reporters out there, and the World Cup is very popular here regardless of whether we're playing or not. There'd be an uproar if the national broadcaster wasn't showing the most popular sporting event in the world (unless the Olympics is more popular).

And I don't think they spent much to get Didi Hamann and Kenny Cunningham.

No other country in the world is showing every single match, that was my point.

Did anyone hear him speak on Duffy. He didn't seem too happy about RTE dropping him from commentary.

Yes there are. Unless things have deteriorated here even more quickly than Iraq I don't think RTE is viewed as a sovereign nation.

I don't think that's always down to choosing to spend less money. Like the way the BBC and ITV have to split the matches between them. And both are probably spending way more than RTÉ on sending people and equipment to Brazil.
There probably wouldn't be a huge difference for RTÉ between paying to show half the matches and showing all of them, seeing as they're only paying for the transmission and the pundits and commentators.

Are you saying that not even in Brazil will you be able to watch all games on TV? Your point is ridiculous!

I'm saying that in their advertising RTE claim to be the only ones showing all the matches.

The studio boys are not even in Brazil. Its only the commentators of the actual matches

Id imagine the advertisement from the breaks, will be sky high rates every game with basically everyone watching the football for 3 weeks solid

I am only back from Spain, and every game is on there live and Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, Germany, I could go on

Every single match will not be live on either RTE or RTE2 ;)

True 4 group games will only be online on the RTE Player

:D I know nothing about football, so I'm just going to bow out gracefully before I rattle any more cages:p

They might possibly be the only station showing them all but that's probably because most countries will have it divided between more than one broadcaster like in the UK.

RTE is the only tv channel in the world where one of the pundits will deliberately use bad language by accident to further his career as a valuably 'controversial' analyst.

I'm not defending him because in his own words 'he's a spoofer' but he genuinely didn't realise he was on air. Didi Hamann was looking at his phone beside him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,775 ✭✭✭✭kfallon

Did he actually swear twice in the clip? When Bill is talking it sounds like Dunphy might be describing a pitch as a 'fooking bog' to Didi but it's more of a mumble

Didi was looking at his phone and Eamon was looking at the red light on the camera that told him now's the time to court some attention.

RTÉ are talking about their competitors for viewiers in Ireland. Neither BBC or ITV are showing all the matches, they have an agreement to split the games between them.

You mean his partly self-funded holiday.

"Undaunted, Magee took the decision to travel to Brazil regardless, footing much of the expense of the two and a half week trip himself."

All of my holidays have been fully self-funded. How about you?

RTÉ are showing all of the matches and sent a team of 6 people to Brazil, including 2 producers. The BBC are showing half of the matches and they sent 200 people.

Regardless of Jimmy Magee's age, he's fúcking useless at commentating.

I don't have exact figures but I would imagine BBC have 10 times the budget of RTÉ for covering this world cup.
