whats the best way to do it?

i was thinking using halfords brake cleaner
and then halfords caliper paint to clean them up

If you look around online you'll find plenty of guides. i believe there's a guide or two on boards aswell if you do a search.

Just using brake cleaner isn't enough. get a wire brush (or a wire brush attachment on an electric drill) and mechanically scrub all the rust and deposits from the brake caliper material.

Then get yourslef a tin of brake caliper paint from Halfords (I believe others have used Hammerite succesfully aswell

As said there is another thread on this in the main Motors section. I recently painted my calipers with hammerite no problems so far. I stuck up before and after pics.

Here is the link to the other thread.

It seems as though painting the calipers with a brush (as opposed to aerosol can) is more durable, it's tidyier, and it's easier

To be honest I'd reckon most people don't prep it properly and when applying paint they don't apply it lightly building up a couple of layers as they go. If the paints is just thrown on it will look horrible. If it's not prepped right from the start the paint will fall off. So prep and application is key.
