I don't know if there is a thread on this subject but I just have to say that I do love to be out on the bog lifting turf. I am sore and sunburnt from being out there today lifting a few skips and I think it does any man or woman the power of good to get out there on the bog and chip away at it for a few hours. does anyone else have the same views or opinions on this like I do?

Maybe not just bog, even hay. Outdoor exercise is great for lungs & shape. Also a sense of feel good & achievement when you can look at totally completed job

A few hours you say I often spent days at turf when I was younger. Why didn't you use sun cream or hat and long sleeved shirt?

Never heard of it. We used to cut with a hay knife and spread with a hay pike (fork, grape to people up the country :)) That bog is planted now we used to cut as much turf that we wanted for £5 a year :) and that was back in the early 80's.

I remember my grandparents and my mam talking about it. I saw it been made at a ploughing competition years ago. A few auld lads were stepping through it in bare feet. Suppose to burn much hotter than normal turf.

A very sought after turf down this way was called "Stone Turf", more grey in colour I understand.
