Howdy, so I've been recieving JSA since the 16th of December 2013, and the academic term for UCD begins on the 8th of Septembr, exactly 38 weeks after. I know I have to be on the dole for 39 weeks, so is there anything I can do?

What were you doing before your claim on 16/12/13....were you on some other sw payment?

Nope, got laid off in October, was told that they'd ring me to go back to work as they thought things would pick back up, never rang me, so I signed on on the 13th of December.

Its a pity that you didnt look for backdating of your claim when your first signed on. Unfortunately if your 6 days short then you wont qualify. You need to be in payment for 234 days.... can you double check with sw as to how many days you will be in payment. I presume you meet the other criteria.

It'll be exactly 228 days, I suppose I'll just have to lie to them about when I'm going back.

Are you going back to college or starting college? You wont be able to lie and you will have to produce documentation stating when the course is starting.

I'm in a similar situation except it comes down to my birthday. I'm a few days short, turn 21 in late September, most courses start a week before. I was told there's nothing you can do about it by quite a few people, however the people at my Local social welfare told me to just hand in the form anyway. You might wanna talk to them and explain the situation.

You could go to you local td and get them to sort it out..why would they want you staying on the dole instead of getting an education..I've heard of it done before

    The country is backwards..

+1 I am on btea I was 2 days short because when the woman in the sw office took my signing card I had the correct date on it which would have given me a month over the time but she put the month down as august instead of July so had to go to local td and get questions asked through the dail and threatened them with legal action and about 6 months later they caved in (thank god as I was running out of money to be in college)

Oh goodness, I didn't know it was that much trouble! I asked Citizen's Information about it and they weren't able to give me an answer. Gave me a number to call and ask, but she said that it's the starting date of the course that counts, not my registration date so there goes that one down the drain.
Well, it's not looking good so far, fingers crossed though

if you ring up the local sw office and ask to talk to who is over the btea and explain to them your situation and lay it out to them that they have a choice here

    1. you dont get your btea and you stay on the dole for an extra year waiting to get the btea and get an educastion

    2. they let the six days slide and you go to your coarse get on well and end up with a high paid job and a contributing member of society and it cost you (the dsp) less money than option 1

When you say you got laid off, were you made redundant? If you were then the 9 month signing period is waved. When you talk to the btea window explain you were laid off, they should wave it, if they don't then ask to speak to a deciding officer.
