Finished yesterday and it didn't go as planned. Fairly ****e in my eyes, I'd be lucky to scrape 500 points.. so I pose the question: does it matter that much? I probably got my college course, but does anyone ever care after this?

Nope. Once you get into your college place no one will ever ask you for your lc results.

Do what all the other wasters do.

    An arts degree.

I got over 500 points on in my LC.

I'm currently sharing a week old apple with my dog whilst cleaning bird crap off a wall for painting.

    So no, it doesn't matter.

I'd die at the thought of an arts degree :/ it's just perceived to be a life changing event and I think I've already kinda realised it's not

Yup, when you get to college everyone has their LC points stamped on their forehead for the first week. This allows you to pick and choose your friends and social circle based on their intellectual capabilities so you aren't stuck with any riff-raff that might drag you down with their neanderthal instincts.

Stay away from the sub 450 crowd, they'll steer you well off the straight and narrow with their drink and drugs and whatnot.

And motorbikes. Don't forget motorbikes. There was a half-dozen of us with 125s used pal around together in college, all sub-300 merchants mind you, so this kind of knuckle-dragging is to be expected.

OP, you should flagellate yourself thoroughly with a steel cat-'o'-the-nine-tails, then thoroughly forget about all that horsepuckey and live your life.

No, the first 18 years of life are essentially a complete waste of time. All most people end up getting out of school is a bit of English and enough math do the shopping.

It's time to forget everything you've learned and start from scratch. That is unless you join a corporation then being an obedient child is perfect for a long career.

I have it in good faith that seagulls have recently evolved to be highly intelligent and plan on taking over the world. The Isle of Man has already been lost. Soon, an education means nothing and the ability to defend yourself against bloodthirsty coastal avian invaders is the difference between life and death. So scrap college and arm yourself to the teeth.

Some of the large IT and Finance consultancies requirea potential employees to have obtained over 450 points in the LC if entering through a graduate scheme.

Barely scraped 500? Gawd that is bad. :-/ Maybe you could repeat next year? Seriously, what will you do when someone asks you what you got?

i completed my leaving and got a degree in programming, my brother left school in 4th and became and electrian

he lost his job as a electrician, i lost mine as a programmer

we both currently have the same job, very well paid with a growing big company in ireland

yep the leaving cert does not matter in the long wrong

Proper order. And that, kids, is why you never see thick people working in Large IT or Finance.

You obviously were focussed on getting a course with your points.
You feel like that's in the bag.
The total points will be irrelevant if that was your goal.

For me there was a lot of pressure to get a certain course and I just about managed to get it. I found the whole LC to be quite traumatic due to the stress and the expectations I was under.

Congrats in advance on getting the course you wanted.

If you're not happy with 500 points then you must have been hoping for something like medicine. If that's the case then either re-sit the LC or start thinking about a different career. But 500 point is an excellent result. My advice would be to get a grip on yourself and enjoy the summer.

My course is in Dublin, Cork and Galway. Points range from 410 to 520 for the exact same course. So it should be ok :) yeah I need to get a grip, some people see this as sarcasm but it's not

I'm sure you'll be fine. And to answer your original question, the LC does and doesn't matter, depending on who you're talking to. But you'll never be held back for having a good one, that's for sure. Best of luck.

Just to let you know arts is actually quite a safe course to do. It's Chemistry or Zoology that might prove to be more dangerous.

Arts may be a running joke for those misinformed but like any degree you get back what you put in. I did arts and I'm in the middle of a masters so it's not the end of the world. Just relax and don't worry what other people think.

The end of the Leaving Cert is a big ole anticlimax - you've been working towards it for so long, it's hard to get to grips with the fact it's over.
You sound confident enough that you'll get your course anyway, so that's a major plus!
I convinced myself I wouldn't get a place on my 'first choice' course, and spent a miserable few weeks at the beginning of August worrying that I wouldn't have enough points, and then when i saw that i had a points surplus of something like 80 (compared to the previous years) I convinced myself that I still wouldn't get in... On my 18th birthday i was offered the course i wanted. I spent 4 fairly miserable years in college, and 5 somewhat miserable years working in my chosen field. Now I work in a completely unrelated, menial position and I love it.
The Leaving Cert is important, but doing what makes you happy is much, much more important :)
    Enjoy your stress free summer!

Exactly. Current LC exam is basically this.

Q: What is Einstein's equation for energy/mass equivalance?
    A: E=MC2

    As opposed to;

    Q: Why does E=MC2?
    A: *engages brain*

The amount of points you get is not an indication of intelligence.

The amount of points required for a course is not an indication of the quality of that course.

Best post of the thread. The leaving cert is a state exam. It's indicative of intelligence the same way that any memory test is indicative of intelligence.

You didn't. Sorry for the confusion. I experienced the same.

I chose my course because I knew the points would be high and it would be top quality because of that.
After the first year I knew it was because of the demand and not the quality of the course itself.

Therefore you've just answered your own question - it does matter. The fact it might not matter after that is irrelevant; at the moment you wouldn't get your course without it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

IT matters if you want to do a college course,
that needs x amount of points in the leaving.
BUT i think its crazy, how some people seem to think ,
if i get x amount of points ,
    i,ll apply for medicine,or law.
Just cos i got high points.
Think about what job ,you, will like to do for the rest of your life.
Work out what points you might need .
Apart from getting into college, in a few years time ,
no one will care what results you got.
OF course some jobs ,may look at your leaving, when screening for interviews. Many graduates end up working in retail ,etc
job s which have nothing to do with the degree you have.

There,s plenty of successful people out there who never went to college.
