Golf Cutting Out

    Hi all

Just wondering if i can pick people's brains with this

Have a 1.6 golf 04 automatic (mk5). The car for some reason cuts out when idling (revs at about 700-800 when idling) but does not do it when driving. sometimes it does reach out a little but does not cut out then.

    Have had:

Vagcom diagnostics - historical cylinder 1 and 4 coils

    In the last few weeks:

Timing belt replaced - twice as the first one fitted by FK VW was faulty (tensioner was making a rattly noise).

Coilpack, plugs, leads, fan belt changed

Nothing showing on vagcom diagnostics why this is cutting out.

    Throttle body cleaned x2.

Have spent a fair bit of cash on this to this point, yet still cutting out.

Any ideas why it might be doing that? there are no other symptoms at all apart from cutting out when at red lights. It drives fine otherwise. this can happen when engine cold or warm.

    Thanks

Does your Golf have a button behind the accelerator for the kick down? Similar thing used to happen years ago to my dad's Carlton and was eventually traced (3 or 4 trips to the dealer) to a sticky kickdown switch - think it was solved with WD40...

I used to have an 03 Octavia that would also cut out at idle, never got it looked at and it righted itself in the end. I seem to remember reading somewhere that lots of weight on the keyring might cause an issue - do you have lots of keys on the same keyring as the ignition key?

My Volvo was cutting out when idling turns out it was my mass air flow sensor changed that and it the problem went away. I picked one up in the breakers yard told them i was not 100 % sure if mine was gone they told me try their one out if i was still having the same trouble i could bring the part back with in a week and get a refund. It was only a 2 min job to fit.

So it might be worth taking a trip to your local breakers.

Yes, sounds like the air flow sensor OR a leak in the air flow pipes somewhere (boost leak).
I have the same problem at the moment, different car but in my case it is a boost leak

thanks for the suggestion. i have the distinct impression the mechanic said he had the air flow checked as it would be the first real reason for such a symptom.

But the fact that this problem does not show up on the vagcom, would it be a sensor? ill ask him about the boost leak

edit: would a bog standard 1.6 engine have a boost where it can leak from? i would have thought it would be the gti engine having that..

Ops my bad, I was thinking about a turbo'd engine.
But I would keep looking at the air flow anyway (to be fully sure there is no leak somewhere).
Let us know what it is when you find out!

    Crankshaft sensor?

thanks again, would sensors not show up when doing diagnostics?

That I'm not sure, but my Mk4 golf was acting the same a while back and the sensor was at fault. Any mechanics on here should be able to confirm your query.

coolant temp sensor is a known issue with the mk4, mine was cutting out, replaced with an oem part and stopped having idling problems. Can send false reading to the throttle body motor.

And its a very cheap fix if this is the case. :D

thanks again. but again i wonder, would a sensor fault not show on vagcom?

    dont trust the electronics :D

A coolant temp sensor fault would show up on VCDS, a MAF related fault probably won't. I doubt either would cause the car to cut out though.

What kind of condition is the air filter in? I had a 1.4 Bora years ago that would cut out when idling, turned out to be a clogged up air filter.

ill check that out, but it had a full service recently. not sure if that was changed, although its very specific times when it cuts out and no other symptoms
