    Hi
I have two weeks holidays coming to me and Im thinking in October of doing the following: the Inca trail and Machu Picchu for the first week and then fly on to Rio in Brazil for the second week. Has anyone done Machu Picchu and how did you do it?- i.e. arrange and fly from Ireland, tour groups etc? thanks!

I think you'd be mad to do it that way, have you spent any time at altitude before? It can affect people differently. The trek is 4 days so you'd basically spend 1.5 days getting to Cusco from Ireland and then another day (minimum) getting from there to Brazil. So you'd end up doing the trek and that's it in Peru!

Spend a couple of weeks in Peru and forget Brazil, there's a lot to see and experience in Peru apart from Machu Picchu.

If you want to do the inca trail in October you need to be booking a permit very soon...

    http://www.machupicchu.gob.pe/rpt/DisponibilidadPorMes.cfm?idLugar=2&mes=10&ano=2014&formatoImpresion=Pdf

Only seems to be availability in the last few days of October.

I totally agree, if you want to do the Inca trail you need 2/3 days at altitude before starting the trek - believe me you will need it just to be able to breathe reasonably well. Spend the entire 2 weeks in Peru, do Rio at another stage !! I booked a two week trip with Gap (now G adventures) and it was brilliant, called Peru Panorama. You would def need to be booking asap if you want to do the 'real' Inca Trail.

    Hi Ruskin,
What did you do in the end? I'm planning on taking a few months in South America in January and the Inca Trail is on the list. How did your organise your trip?

we went with this crowd for the inca trail and they show what dates are available to do it as like someone previously said it fills up fast

you can still visit it without doing the trail and if you don't have enough time to acclimatise in cusco for the trail then this might be a good option

    Thanks Bungaro.

Would you recommend them as a tour organizer?

i would recommend them jesper, you will find cheaper companies but we went with this crowd as they take care of their porters and they were great to deal with.
