Rent allowance

I am trying to advise a young couple living in rented accommodation. One on dole (actively seeking work) and the other just started a part time job. Money is very tight and I suggested applying for rent allowance. They believe because their landlord doesn't live here that they wouldn't get rent allowance. Is this true? Honestly, I don't know how they can afford to eat while paying their rent. Compared to rents I heard about theirs is lower than most, its a tiny apartment, but its still more than they can afford. Would be grateful for any advice.

There is a part of the form that has to be filled out and signed by the landlord or letting agency.

Also the fact that they are a couple and one is working may prevent them from getting rent allowance as its means tested.

There is also maximum rent caps for rent allowance so if they are over the cap they wont be considered for rent allowance.

All the info they would need is here.

Many thanks for the info, will check it out. Their landlord visits every few months so he could complete the form next time he comes.
