    Hi all.

Going on a small (budget) trip to Donegal in July for a week with the girlfriend. We're bringing 3 dogs with us and a telescope (not mine!) so need a wee bit of space. The S2k will not cut it this time!

What's the cheapest way to rent a car? We can grab it and drop it back to Dublin Airport which is closeby.

I've never rented one before so any and all help would be great.

You need a driving licence and a credit card to rent a car. All the major operators are in Dublin airport - Hertz, Avis, Budget etc. Check their websites for what's available and prices.

What are you expecting to see through a telescope in Donegal in July? You do realise that it will never get dark and a telescope is useless for looking at the northern lights?

T's & C's usually also require that you've held a full licence for a set number of years and that you're over 25. If you're under 25 you can usually pay a surcharge, but you'll be limited to very small vehicles that may not accommodate you.

There may be prohibitions on carrying animals too where you'll have to pay a soilage charge if the car comes back coated in dog hair.

    We're 27 and 29, both full licences.

The telescope isn't mine so whether she sees the northern lights or the neighbours lights is all the same to me.

Depending on the size of the dogs there may be no cheap option. If they are a big bred you're going to need an estate and they are never cheap to rent, along with the risk that you won't get an estate when renting as they only reserve a vehicle in the class, while if they are medium or smaller you could get away with a hatchback which are cheaper, but you still risk not getting a suitable vehicle. A small van might be a better option than a car.

Sorry should have clarified - 3 small dogs!

these are your best option, always cheaper than direct with the company!

i used them tow weeks ago for hire from birmingham airport for one day, booked a hyundai i30 or similar, when i arrived i ended up getting a pimped out volvo v70 d5 estate with all the extras and only 10 miles on the odometer! for 27 euro fr the day!

I would do the same and swap my 5 series estate for a week were it not for the thought of 3 dogs pissing and ****ting in it for the week.

We might go all-out and decide not to actually LIVE in the car for the week :p
