Chipper about freight but gloomy about Inter City. I didn't think it was legal to cross-subsidise one part of the business at the expense of another

I read that a bit differently - on lines that are primarily passenger then they assume that any costs for line maintenance etc would be covered by passenger operations, with freight an added bonus. Freight would, however, have to cover itself on freight only lines.

But, yes, he did seem upbeat about freight, which is great to hear. Long may it continue and grow.

    From David Franks
Inter-City hasn’t been performing so well and this is mainly down to competition from the new motorways constructed during the ‘Celtic Tiger’ years when money seemed to be no problem. Although we attracted investment in the rail network at the same time, it was mostly concentrated on new routes rather than improving the line speeds on the Inter-City routes to make them compete more effectively.

At least he realises it, unlike some who blindly ignore it.
