    Hi all,

I have an honors degree in business and marketing, and have been working in sales for the last 6 years.
I'm thinking of a bit of a career change to accountancy.

I'm thinking of doing my first year CAP1 exams while keeping my current role, and then in year 2 start to get industry experience of which i need 3.5 years.
Do you have to get a trainee role, contracted for 3 and half years to do this.
Or can just get a junior position in business gaining my industry experience there?

any help or advice is greatly appreciated

Maybe something like the Chartered Business Route would be a good idea for you. It's a lot more flexible than a standard training contract. http://www.charteredaccountants.ie/en/Prospective-Students/Chartered-Business-Route/

Just be certain that you really want to do this. Seeing as how you have a degree and have been working for 6 years I'm guessing that you're past your mid twenties. Do you really want to start all over again? While training, the pay is crap and at least half of your weekends are taken up by lectures. It's a lot of hard work and it can be difficult to get into the frame of mind for study once you're a few years out of college.

I'm not saying don't go for it, I'm just saying think long and hard first.

Agree with prettyrestless, make sure it's something that you'll be able to commit to. CAP1 has lectures every second weekend (Friday night, Saturday & Sunday) and while most of the syllabus isn't overly complicated there's a lot to learn.

With the new Chartered Business route (previously called Elevation) you don't have to go down the route of a traditional trainee contract where you have no previous work experience and get paid a pittance. You will however need a mentor (ACA qualified colleague) who will sign off on your work diary to show that you're gaining the relevant experience. But if you do decide to go down the traditional trainee role in practice then you'll get great study leave, although I wouldn't recommend leaving it all until then.

Contact CAI and go to any information evening that's coming up.
