McAleese: asking bishops’ advice on family life ‘bonkers’

Former president Mary McAleese has described as “completely bonkers” Pope Francis’s plan to ask a synod of bishops to advise him on whether church teaching on the family should change.

She said there was “just something profoundly wrong and skewed” about asking “150 male celibates” to review the Catholic Church’s teaching on family life.

She has a point of course, it is bonkers that bishops should dictate the churches line on family life. But in stating that is McAleese not highlighting the fact that the Church itself is bonkers ? Why is this so ridiculous to her, their line of homosexuality wrong etc and she's still happy to be a member of the Church ?

Has this picking and choosing aspects of a religion and trying to change those that don't fit with personal views just not itself absurd ? To me it seems a bit like saying "I want to play tennis but I'm gonna play it with a hurl". The churches teachings are not compatible with modern, tolerant, liberal views. Why cant an intelligent woman like Mary McAleese accept that and reassess her membership of the Church instead of ignoring it in favour of fighting to completely change it to hold onto her faith that was itself grounded in those teachings she now is trying to change ?

Are people that blind that they cannot see that the reason religious teachings are in contrast with their own personal views is because they do not actually subscribe to the teachings of that particular religion ?

I know what you mean - a lot of Catholics seem to be able to separate the RCC as an organization from the Catholic religion. Which works out great for the RCC itself.

To quote an article in the Irish Times today -
They have been disappointed in the church enough times, but still they stay, because they do not confuse belief in God with faith in the church, and they know that every institution is made up of broken people, and they find nourishment and support in gathering as part of a believing community to worship and pray.

The RCC at the highest level can do anything it wants - it has an army of apologists that repeat this propaganda to their flock after every scandal.

Do you want her to be a protestant?!?

Doesn't the bible say they should all be married anyway because otherwise how can they give advice?

Why didn't she finish by saying what the logical solution is (from a Catholic's POV)? I.E instead of asking your bishops ask God. You know, the guy that endows you with papal infallibility. Unless she's claiming flawed humans know better than their creator and omnipotent deity. That too would be absurd. Who would have thought religion and absurdity could ever cross paths?

    David Quinn not happy.

    http://www.independent.ie/opinion/columnists/david-quinn/why-there-is-much-more-to-modern-family-life-than-knowing-how-to-change-a-nappy-30370275.html
To use the Church's terminology, it's a 'synod' and it is one of the very first initiatives the Pope announced after taking office last year.

Our former president drew attention to it by condemning Pope Francis' plan as "completely bonkers".

Why is it bonkers? She says it's bonkers because the family is going to be discussed by a bunch of men "who have decided they are not going to have any children, not going to have families, not going to be fathers and not going to be spouses".

Seeing as Jesus made all those same decisions for himself (unless we're to believe The Da Vinci Code that is), I suppose we'll have to ignore anything he had to say about the matter as well.

Sometimes I wonder if he reads what he's written before sending it off

For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. nd a man's foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me

Yeah, best listen to his advice :p

Oh I have no doubt that he does. That's the tragycomedy of it all.

One likely possible reason so many Catholics still remain with the church despite all these issues is because they genuinely believe that their soul is in jeopardy if they don't remain with what they believe is the one true church.
That was one of the reasons I left it. Even if it were true, that to get into heaven you had to remain a member of the RCC, I could not in good conscience support it since it is an extremely corrupt and immoral organisation.
