What salary to expect for a Java dev?

    Dear community,

If you have 2 years of Java development, 1 year of C++ development, 0.5 year of experience in Python (Django, JSON), 0.5 year of C# web development with ASP.NET what minimum salary you could expect?

My last project was in Java, I tried simple multithreading, know by heart 10 famous algorithms and their complexities, used common generics such as hashmap, hashset, linkedlist, arraylist, tree but never used something complicated like linkedhashmap or priority queue.

And have some beginner experience in C++, Python and C#, also in PHP. Can I pretend for a Middle Java Role in a mid size company? I have quite enough invitations for the interviews and when I will be successful what salary would you recommend me to ask? Just give your approximate estimation.

    Many thanks.

With 4 years of experience, you might just be able to squeeze into a senior development role if you interviewed well and knew your stuff. You'd probably be looking at a salary of about €50k.

Thank you for the answer. Well, I thought that Senior is if you have 5 years of experience in a single area, I hardly correspond to a Middle developer with only 2 years. Experience in other languages is a plus but it is not advanced, so on average I would give myself 3 years of experience. 50k sounds too much I think. When I heard that AIB is hiring graduates with a year of experience for 24k, I would think to ask 30k as I'm also a recent graduate (have 2 educations in 2 different countries, I'm not Irish).

I get more than that with much less experience, don't sell yourself short.

Big demand out there for good developers. Remember know your worth and sell your value, don't limit yourself.

30k? There are engineering/software graduates who don't know their arse from their elbow getting nearly 30k here fresh out of college.

You are educated in two different institutions which gives scope for a more varied learning experience. You also have years of experience in a relevant industry. You most certainly deserve a lot more than 30k. I agree with the above, know your worth and be assertive with the knowledge.

It depends on location. There are tons of salary surveys that you can look up with locations shown as a factor.

For software roles? I'd check your sources, that second figure is likely closer to their graduate salary.

Can anybody explain me things with tax. Here say I have 30k per annum, I'm single PAYE worker, no children, age 18-29 and I must have a full medical card as a non-EU citizen. Then what I understand from the calculations provided by the link above:

Net Income = Gross Income - Universal Social Charge - PRSI - Income Tax
    = 30k - 1k - 1.2k - 2.7k = 25.1k

Cutoff = Gross Income + Credits - GreenCardPrice
    = 30k + 3.3k - 0.5k = 32.8k

Why Credits was not added when computing Net Income? That is,
Real Net Income = Net Income + Credits - GreenCardPrice
    = 25.1k + 3.3k - 0.5k = 27.9k

So is 27.9k the real net income or it is 25.1k as shown by that calculator?

    25.1k as per the calculator.

The cutoff of 32.8k means that any additional income is taxed at a different (higher) rate. So if you were earning 40k you'd get 32.8k taxed at the lowest rate as per the calculator and then the remaining 7.2k taxed at a higher rate.

AIB roles start at a min of 24k. For Grad IT roles 8 years ago they were offering 29k. Id say they are offering at least that now, if not more as its very hard to hire Java devs, Even grads.

In answer to the original question, it really depends on what you have learned. You should be looking for 40k min, if you spent 4 years in Java I would be looking for 50. If you know your stuff and you got the right company you would get 50k

From what I've seen, anyone that reaches 3 years of experience in development tends to be made Senior Developer (obviously depends on the company). Friend of mine passed 3 years in the same company last year and got made senior dev and is on €48k.
