    Hi,

I was lucky enough to get a ticket for ROK. I have only lidl/aldi shorts and have only done about 70k to date in them. I do start to feel the saddle after 50k or so and wonder if this is down to conditioning or the quality of the shorts. Has anyone took the plunge over 180k with these?

    Jon

I did 210km last Friday in Aldi bib tights. Not a bother. I do 70km a day in them, so I'm well used to them by now.

If you want a good pair of bib shorts but don't want to pay top dollar I'd recommend Wiggle's DHB (sp) own brand or Altura (available on a lot of online shops).

Even cheaper and still very good quality is the MFX A Pure Breed line from sports direct. Only €25 at the minute for the bibs because they are doing a 1 for 1 exchange on Euros.

Second that. I picked up a pair of Altura Progel bibs in Halfords last year for about €60. I've found them just fine for sportives and certainly not a problem going over 170km. Loads of people seem to have them.

Bought a set of the shorts this morning. I think the were 50e in Halfords but not sure if there is a difference between gel/progel?

I have Altura airstream and picked up an Aldi pair recently. No comparison, Altura is miles better. I barely use Aldi ones at all. They're better than nothing but that's about all

I have Altura ProGel and find them excellent on long spins. I haven't attempted anything near 170km but they're good for 100km so I doth see why they wouldn't be good over 170km.

I also have Craft, Santini, Hincapie and Nalini shorts but prefer the Alturas over them all.

Anyone ever try these? There's a 15% discount code for sports direct at the mo but there's no review on them. I've got a pair of bib shorts from aliexpress which I find grand but like the OP, I do start to feel some discomfort around the 60km mark.

For the price they are decent, better than the lidl/aldi ones, not as good as altura or DHB.

If anyone needs another suggestion, I picked a pair of continental bibs as my first shorts from chainreaction based on the positive reviews. I paid a little over €50 for them and they've been great for about a year now; comfortable and durable (been through at least 200 washes). Some people might not like the logos on them though.

When good or bad is mentioned in bib tights what is meant? The amount of padding or the quality of the chamois material in contact with the skin?
If one is having a hard time in the seated position there is alternative action which can help...
For the padding just get a good saddle, any padding will do.
For the material use a good amount of sudacream or the like and this should soften the situation.

    Oh yes and rule 5.

Note to anyone buying cycling shorts. Top priority should be them not being so tight that when your cycling your not giving everyone behind a good look at your underwear less arse. I was behind a guy the other day and it was awful. Saying that I was behind a girl yesterday with the same issue and it wasn't so awful. I was driving and was going to tell her about the issue at the light but thought she might of been offended.

That's more to do with quality rather than being too tight. Cycling shorts need to be reasonably tight to avoid creases/folds/chaffing.

i grabbed these about two years ago. Did all my racing and training in them last year, not a single problem. Till i picked up a pair of plain black dare2be shorts with a "gel" pad in the chamois. Then i got a saddle sore after 1 club league race in mondello. Got new club gear this year but the continental shorts are still going strong, dug out if the club shorts aren't dry/not washed/the weather is manky.

tl;dr - continental shorts are great quality.

Were talking about the shorts or bibs being so tight that the material is see through!

Raced for years in standard club bib shorts.Bought a pair of Assos Neo Pro bib shorts from there new range. The difference is very noticeable. Just great all round comfort, will last me for years.Although they are a little bit pricey at €155
