It's got quite bad, had a piece of it literally fall out the other day. There doesn't seem to be much of it left so I don't know how they could drill & fill it, or even how they can get it out but I presume that will have to be the procedure. I really need it done soon because what is left of the tooth is extremely sharp/jaggy, it's causing plenty of cuts on my tongue and great discomfort, trouble sleeping, eating etc.

Can I ring up a dentist and book this treatment or do I have to go in for a check-up etc? I have a lot of other work needing done that I've been putting off for years but there's not a hope I can afford it all (don't even think I can afford this one thing!) so I just want quick & cheap (and safe obviously).

Anyone know what sort of price I'm facing here? Can I get any financial support etc

You should attend for an appointment as soon as possible - your symptoms indicate that you may well have some significant issues - underlying abscesses, decay, which could cause acute pain at any time. It is also important to have a full oral assessment carried out - how else are you able to plan for future care? A full assessment is required as far as I am concerned, even when patients attend for an emergency appointment.
Far better to plan ahead, and to sort out issues before they rear their ugly head as an emergency over holiday period / family occasion etc..
As for financial support - do you have a medical card?

I don't have a medical card, I thought they stopped doing those? I'm working Jobbridge so no significant income. Presumably I just have to suffer until I've saved enough?

it is unlikely anybody will do it for you for free but some dentists will have payment plans to spread costs

You wont find anyone that will spread payments on a one off treatment such as an extraction, and anyone that does is an idiot. Get a bank, credit union, family or credit card loan. Your dentist is not a bank.
