Hello to all you gear heads out there!

I m putting my 2004 Audi A3 on he market as we had a bambino a few months back.

While looking on Done Deal i noticed the Peugeot 407... nice size car.. 2 l diesel... like the styling ... and small money!!

Im thinking there must be alot of faults with them to be going so cheap..
i mean theres a 2006 2liter turbo diesel sport going or 3500! and many others are cheaper.

Any advice on this car would be greatly appreciated :)

Nope nope nope nope nope nope.
seriously to go from an Audi to a Pug you will be horrified. See what A4/passat/Octavia you can get for the money. If your into sporty cars the Octavia vRS is nice. 3.5k will get ya something nice and personally I'd prefer an older good xar to fresher reg plate on a junker.

Driven and repaired plenty. French cars in general are not as well built or engineered as German or Asian cars. Engine reliability issues annd electrical gremlins will be it's downfall. I suppose there will be someone on soon that will tell you he's done a million miles in one and it's perfect but realistically their cheap for a reason.

I just bought mazda 6 grom 2004. With Your budget probably You could get 06+.
Overall it's a great car. I did check few others like the 407 which You mentioned but the bad reviews from a lot of people did scary me away. Chances to get decent car without issues was to big. Compared to that M6 is quite reliable car. Starting from engine, which have timing chain not belt, I'm not sure about the 05+, suspension which maybe isn't the best for the comfort on the road but is great in terms of handling. The space inside is massive, I'm a big man but inside M6 I fill tiny, with me in front someone can still sit behind me which was a surprise to me. I've the sedan version, the boot is pretty big, only minor minus could be problem putting something wider with that small "hole".
In first gen. there is a problem with rust, as far remember they did fix that in facelift but can't be 100% sure.
I was checking cars like A4/Passat/Octavia/C5/407. M6 won thanks to price/quality factor. Getting decent A4 or Octavia was over my budget but even with money I'm certain that still I would go for Mazda. After first test drive I fell in love with it. Give it a try.

Ive 1.8l petrol, im doing around 25 km to work so diesel would be pointless.
After first week I can say that it was very good purchase. I just need to get MPG down, now im getting around 22 but im not driving properly yet :) High rev sounds to good.

Diesel version has issues with crank bearings, best to avoid diesel unless you can find ine that jas had them replaced. Otherwise Mazda 6 is a good motor, nice drive and reilable.

Im in Greystones, for mine I had to go to Wexford. The ones around Greystones/Dublin werent in great shape.
Maybe check Octavia? My brother in law had one, 2004 estate and it was bulletproof. He only had problems with suspension, the polish roads arent that great.

I've had two Peugeots and haven't had any bother. Its what life the car has had that determines the quality!!!

DON'T forget Volvo & Ford use a lot of PSA Peugeot Citroen technology, notably the 1.6 HDi. As for the Mazda 6 I always was under the impression as part of Ford Motor Company they also used the 1.6 HDi.

407 in my opinion was a let down but 106, 406, 308 and 508 a total different kettle of fish. Peugeot are among the best diesel engine manufactures. Good on fuel, cheap to tax, and parts are pretty cheap when compared to the Germans.

Flywheels / Clutches have been known to give a little bit of bother, but if the service history is good, 1 previous owner, I wouldn't snub a French car.

I know a rake of people who have had a real shock when they discover the over inflated reliability of VW.
