Hi all, first timer in Paris, will be going with the girlfriend for a weeks stay. I'm a bit clueless in regards to best place/area to stay for our visit. But I do know that the public rail is very efficient to get around with. Budget is around 80euros max, but obviously less is better :D. I see there's B&Bs, apartment rentals and also hotels, which one of these would ye recommend? Anybody with specific names of good accomomdations would be much appreciated! Many thanks in advance!

ive stayed in a number if Ibis budget hotels about Paris and found them fine.
Now, they are basic and far from romantic but they are clean and functional with free (and decent) wifi and if you are literally only there to sleep for 8hours at night then not a bad option.
For instance here: http://www.accorhotels.com/gb/hotel-4982-ibis-budget-paris-la-villette-19th/index.shtml which is right by a metro, not as far out as most, near north station so handy-ish for the airport if coming by train and available for 47 a room a night in August.

None of the ibis budget are right in the centre but theres heaps of them just a stonesthrow from the metro like the one above, which you will need to be using anyhow no matter where you stay.

I trawling through the list of hotels and was wondering if i choose a landmark to be close to, which landmark would be best to be close to for general tourist activities? Thanks in advance!

I stayed in Hotel Le Home Latin last August. It's 5 minutes from Notre Dame and the Latin Quarter. Clean and very reasonable. Have a look on TripAdvisor for reviews. I paid 369 for two people for three nights so it was very good value.

What about being close to the Iffel Tower? Would that be a good idea?

No. Just take a look at a map of Paris and decide what you want to see. Paris is small and public transport excellent so everything is within range but if you wanted to walk everywhere then the tower wouldn't be a good base to walk from.

I think that will be the factor that decides where you stay rather than the geography of the city. Have you had many options for the dates that you want to stay from the usual hotel search sites (e.g. Kayak)?

The wife stayed last year in an apartment (utter kip, clean, but a dive nevertheless) between the tower and the river and found the area lovely.
She has seen the more dodgy parts of the city over the years, and the exceptionally dodge suburbs, and she couldn't compliment the area there more.
There was markets on a Sunday and bakeries open and just a general nice place to be.
I'm sure there's nicer areas, but I can report of, and have stayed in worse!

And plenty of good places to be found at that price on that site.

theres a sale currently on accor hotels which are the largest hotel chain in France, for stays in July and August.
40% off AND they throw in breakfast.
So Ibis hotels in Paris near the centre for 60odd euro incl brekkie! Cant go wrong with that.

You just need to sign up (for free - no catches - and if anything theres only benefits) to their loyalty card scheme. Theyll send you the link to access the cheapo prices then.
