Hi all . Looking for some clarification please. To claim any entitlements , payments or to join any of the newer schemes you have to be classed as a farmer but what exactly does this mean. We are in the position of being able to farm a reasonable size of land ( all grass ) but don't know if its worth our while starting anything if we are not eligible for any grants etc. we have rented out the land for the previous number of years to facilitate claiming what we could but with the old entitlements scheme being wound up we where forced to sell what we had. So we are wondering if we started farming the land ourselves what would we be entitled to grant wise or should we just keep letting it out

Best advice would be to consult an independent agricultural advisor. Maybe you would be better of consulting one that is not located in your immediate area.
You will have to divulge some details - background, inheritance (if any), general financial situation, educational (green cert or equivalent) etc.

Not sure for your situation but for capital aqusitions tax a farmer is classed as a person whos farm assets are 80% or more of their total assets.
