Just done a cheap job lately. got my brother in law to help me. He has a trailer behind his jeep and he got 10 lengths of box iron. They come in 25 foot lengths and cost 20.00 each. I had already some telegraph posts driven and he had a cordless gun that he used with anchor screws. We done some of this before. Seems to work fine so far. Done one last year similar and works well. They are at least as good as tying gates together and better in my opinion.

I need to put one up myself at the moment. I did one a few years back with railway girders as uprights and tubular galvanised lengths. A lot of work but should be a job for life.

Put one up last year. 6 ESB pole sections for uprights, 2 lengths of old bent crush tubes at high level on the stone wall side. We use 4 gates (2 ends and 2 on one side) when required which are removed when that land is not in use. A danger of this is that the gates may disappear. I arrived to the field one day and all ties on the gates had been removed, presumably someone was due back that night to collect the gates and had the prep work done.

I'd be thinking if I went to the bother of erecting a pen I'd go the whole hog and a) do it right. b) put a crush in it.

If you put up the surrounding with barriers / tubing / 6x3, it'd not take much more to add the crush.

Motorway barriers are about 13 foot long per piece, and usually about 30Euro. Nice smooth profile so easy on cattle. This is the neighbours set up. He has a short crush with a proper head gate on the right hand side of the pen. those ESB poles are almost 18 inches across, they are cut from the really high (80 foot?) ones used with the high power lines. (you can see the newly erected ones in the background)

If you didn't have the poles already to hand, would be as cheap to buy RSJ.

That is a super looking pen
