Shimano XTR pedals & mountain bike shoes for a road bike?!

Hi! I cycle with a club, do a lot of events like W200, An Post series etc...
Currently i have Look Keo pedals and cleats.. They are good on the bike.. But once you get off & walk, they are uncomfortable & i feel as if i'm just wearing the cleat surface..

I am considering Shinsno XTR 980 pedals and cleats with mountainbike style shoes..
So i can get off the bike and walk around with ease..

    What do you think?
Will these pedals be as efficient in putting down the power on the bike?
I imagine they will last a lot longer?!

    Thanks a mil!

You should check out Durianrider on youtube. This Australian guy does mega mileage on his roadbike and swears by his shimano XTR pedals.

Hi! Yea, i saw some of his videos & he does recommend them...
As far aa i can tell, having proper roadbike pedals and cleats only gives a marginal advantage!!

It is possible to get decently stiff MTB shoes but they tend to be expensive.

I only have experience of Specialized. The Comp ones were pretty floppy but the S-Works are as good as the best road shoes.

Even with stiff shoes the pedal feel isn't quite as nice as road shoes and unintentional disengagement is more likely.

Overshoes are also more problematic as the sole tread cuts into them and makes them wear much faster.

Some people don't care about sole stiffness. Blorg of this parish has cycled round the world and only incurred toe-related injuries once from his ridiculous SPD sandals.

    Thanks for the replies...
Another option is to make covers for the look keo cleats for walking around (ie off the bike!)?

As it happens, Look make covers for their cleats. I am unable to post the link. Gpoogle look cleat covers. Wiggle have them.

No he's not an idiot. Reckon the guy is highly intelligent and very clued in to whats happening.
He's not afraid to tell the truth, however uncomfortable it may seem.

He's about as clued into what's going on as a grapefruit is.
His "advice" is ridiculous, he's a snake oil salesman.

I posted this on another thread in relation to the comparison of Look cleats and SPD.... "These, http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-pd-a520-touring-pedals/, or the A600 version combined with http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-r064...cycling-shoes/ or the RT82 would cover most activities on a road bike, the RT82 also gives you the walking aspect and the way the cleat is inset into the sole also means that there is actually more contact area with the shoe to the pedal than even Look cleats - but as I said, not that a mere mortal would be able to notice that difference transferred to performance"

I think in the above if you can stretch your budget to two pairs you can have the best of both worlds. I use SPD with the RT82 shoes - I don't race but have lately being getting into more long distance and I find them perfectly fine and are an advantage at stops etc. I know there are covers available for other cleats but that just gives you something extra to carry and deal with when you stop. I also think that the way the SPD cleats interface with the ground means they will wear better, i.e., flat surface compared with the lugs on the Look type cleats.

I use SPD shoes and pedals all the time. Fine and comfy, good contact and support. I reckon you would benefit from SPD-SL pedals when racing but otherwise, SPDs should do fine.
